Leaves red on the edges - virus?

I have 6 Griffith Buck Aunt Honey roses. Overtime the edges of their leaves turn red and the red slowly moves to the center. The leaves also appear to have undercast of lemon lime color verses a medium green. Any idea what this could be? Other roses near by that are of different varieties are doing fine. Thanks

So you have 6 of these with the same symptom, and other roses are fine? I guess you planted the AHs at the same time in similar soil; could the soil be quite different from your other roses' soil? It might be some kind of very severe nutrient toxicity or deficiency. Desert soils can have chemical hot-spots--mushroom compost can be overloaded with lime-- maybe you added too much of something to the soil mix-- etc.

This is assuming you've been watering appropriately for the climate and haven't overfertilized or sprayed something phytotoxic lately.

It looks like you could lose the plants. I would take some leaves to the county agent's office (ag extension) and also arrange for a soil test.

It's not virus. The non-green areas in virused leaves are clear yellow, white, or less commonly pink. The surface isn't dead-looking but has the same texture as the rest of the leaf.

Thanks for your input, guys. I found one study that detected red ringspot in rabbiteye cultivars (linked below), but, like you mentioned blueboy, most everything else that I've read suggests that they're resistant or immune. For now, I think I'll isolate this particular plant and see how it progresses. It's been in close proximity to a variety of highbush cultivars over the last year, though, and, given their susceptibility, I'm a little concerned about them. Only time will tell, I suppose. Do you have a picture? I'm in zone 5 so it's a little difficult for me to imagine zone 9, but black could be a fungus (red, too, maybe), and in the fall it is common for hydrangeas to show fungus problems. Typical of the species and not life threatening. Red is sometimes from stress, sometimes it is just a seasonal fall thing. The new plant "Lady in Red" is very proud of her fall red foliage. If the rest of the plant looks healthy and green then I would think you don't have a problem. Good luck. Hay.

ph or nutrient problem. Have ph checked. When the ph is out of line, certain elements get locked up and can't be used by the plant. 6.3-6.5 is ideal. Don't add anything to them now without testing first.

I suspect temperatures recently shot up at your place and you may have sprayed recently as well. This looks like heat stress and/or spray damage. Never spray when temps are over 80F.

michaelg - I just read your comment that mushroom compost can have a lot of lime in it........and I just bought a big bag of mushroom compost! Could you please explain a little more?

Mushroom compost is rotted manure, often with lime added to control mushroom diseases, and some of the nutrients depleted by the mushroom cropping. pH can be very alkaline, around 8, but you don't know until you test it. If your native pH is 6.7 or higher, I wouldn't choose this as a soil additive, but a 1" layer dug in shouldn't have much effect.

Someone here reported using mushroom compost as the main soil fraction and having chronic severe nutrient deficiency symptoms as a result. But again, the pH is unknown until it is tested.

Thanks for your information on the mushroom compost! My intentions were to only add it in small amounts but it's good to now be aware of the lime issue so as to not add too much.

I am going to have my soil tested. This line of thinking had not occurred to me. Another thought is that this rose, Aunt Honey, might react this way (leaves turning red) if it hits a cold snap, which we have had.

I don't spray and none of the other roses in the bed are having the problem...all planted at the same time using the same theoretical soil mix.
