Troy bilt super bronco new engine won't start

I just put a new engine in. 19hp Kohler courage. Had someone replace the short block and carburetor.I removed the old engine and took it to someone to replace the short block and carburetor and I installed on the mower. It won't start. It only fired a couple of spurts one time. The spark plug is firing. I have sprayed starting fluid in the carburetor. Still nothing. Valves are set right. Dones anyone have an idea?. I hate to have to take it back.

Try squirting a spoonful of engine oil in the cyl. Sometimes the rings need some oil to seal good for the intial startup.

1)LOSE the starting fluid (ether) - good way to trash your new engine. Use rattlecan carb cleaner instead.
2) Reconfirm all electrical re-hooked back up as original - no shortcuts.
3) verify fuel filter is OEM and installed in correct flow direction.
4) pull ignition wire off plug and disconnect fuel line at carb. use catch container. have assistant crank engine with cl/brake fully depressed, 1/2 throttle, no choke, PTO sw off. If good flow of fuel, hook fuel line and ignition wire back up.
5) Remove air cleaner. Wih assistant cranking engine as above, spray several shots of carb cleaner directly into carb throat. If engine pops and tries to start, you still have a fuel delivery problem., If not, an igntion or mechanical problem.
6) fuel problem - remove carb. disassemble, soak overnite in liquid carb cleaner. using magnifying glass and stiff small dia brass wire, probe all component orifices - blow out with rattlecan carb cleaner and compressed air. Rebuild using rebuild kit - use only new gaskets and float valve seats.
7) ignition/mechanical problems: due to the multiple possible causes involved, best to get the engine model/type numbers; go to the kohler engine website; download the specific engine service manual you will need.

don't feel lonesome afriend of mine got gave to him a 21" selfpropelled,electric start he said that after w while of mowing it would die gas would come out of the carb. found part # ordered one from ebay put it on today start die start die,took it off clened up the old one mowed about 30feet started spitting spurtting then dead it will not hit a lick primer bulb is working insted of shooting a mist into the carb it spewes out of a brass pipe in the carb. could almost run back out spraye carb cleaner in it won't hit a lick.going to try one more carb. if it don't work to the dumpster it goes i even did a compression check 100psi that's good enough to run on.seems to me like troy bilt had a bunch of 2nds not up to standard quality passed them of to lowes and other places got a lowes hot line going to call tommorrow see what they say.not mine they may not talk to mei don't know when engine cos. quit rating engines in hp this is 7.00hp bought a new bolens it's ccs.

Hey guys, Thanks for the info and encouragement. I did take the S-B back but did not get the Pony after all. I got the "Big Red" instead. Boy, does it do a great job! I brought it home and tilled a little over 1000 sf to the full 8" in about an hour. Love having those extra gears (4 forward & 2 reverse), with neutral for idling, disengage tines when not needed, and throttle control on the handle. I found that easing back on the throttle makes it much easier to turn this 350 lb beast at the end of a row. I told my dear wife (whom insisted I get this instead of the Pony) that it is sturdy enough and powerful enough to outlast both of us (I'm 56); and one of our 5 kids or 8 grandkids will inherit a very nice piece of equipment. Tomorrow's game plan is to get the compost from beneath the leaves on the wooded section of our backyard and mix it into the plot I just tilled and start getting the beds ready for planting. I'm looking forward to spring, even though I know the garden will keep me out of my woodworking shop. So little time and even less energy these days. Thanks again for your input, Paul

Yes, "jump starting" is a good way to determine if the starter will perform when furnished with enough battery power. That the lights "burn" is not proof of a good battery. A battery might show 12 volts immediately after charging but that is only the level of voltage. What it takes to crank an engine is lots of amperes (current). Your battery can show 12 volts and still lack the amp capacity to crank an engine. In fact, it is quite common for a defective battery to actually display 12 volts (or more) immediately after charging, but it is only a temporary thing. The voltage will drop quickly if left sitting for a short time. A load test is always the best indicator of battery health.

2 thing you can do get sea foam its gas additive with solvent for gasoline try run engine at what speed it will run so solvent clean as goes through carburetor jetting like Idle and main jets. After run 15 to 30 minutes let set so solvent soften what in jet this take more time setting like over night. Crank up next day if run good after 15 minutes the sea foam worked if don't step 2 take carburetor apart clean jet with small wire that less size of holes in jets after wire air blow jets to get crumbs out fresh gas and add sea foam to new gas and twice year there after. Adding sea foam twice year will keep jetting system so this event want happen again. I always use B 12 carb cleaner with straw and wear safety Glass as carb. apart see that all passage are open this keep from repeating carb. clean over and over.

I tried the oil in the cylinder but that didn't help. It is getting fuel and fire. I just realized it doesn't have compression because I can't tell any difference in compression with the spark plug in or out. How could that be with a brand new short block.

It must have a valve issue because that is all that was not replaced. The valves are either not seating or they are out of time.

If the valves aren't in time w/ the crankshaft you'll have to take it back. When you say "shortblock", do you mean one that came w/ crank,piston rod and camshaft or do you mean just a bare block?
