Not sure about the fig, but the pomegranate is almost surely the variety "Nana" which many of those mail order catalogs sell. You can even find them for sale at the florist or the local grocery store sometimes. It is a Japanese dwarf pomegranate, and purely ornamental. Although I've seen claims of good quality fruit, it rarely sets any, and the few I've tasted were tiny (smaller than a golf ball) and not very sweet. Hope this helps...

Not unusual at all. I'm in zone 7 and some of my incarnata vines don't emerge until late June, early July. Plants I have at the end of the driveway are about the same size as the ones in your pic. The ones near the house are significantly bigger. Probably because the brick radiates heat into the soil. You might want to pull up some of the grass and plants growing near the passion vines.

You can certainly harvest the seeds from the fruits, that's what they were produced for! :) Just know that germination can be very erratic for Passifloras -- sometimes you will get something up in a week, then nothing for a month, then 3 up, then nothing for a couple months, then more.... P. incarnata climbs/scrambles by means of tendrils; it doesn't wind like a morning glory. So if there is something on the pole for it to cling to, it may work, but it tends to be more a scrambler, holding to and growing over other plants. As you will see in other posts, it is also quite weedy when happy, so keep this in mind when you plant it; if it takes, you will eventually have it popping up everywhere, at a considerable distance from the mother plant.

Susie, I gotta tell you that Northern Michigan isn't exactly a gourmet food mecca, LOL. HOWEVER....there are exceptions. I'd advise at least a couple of things. If he's a history buff, take a drive about 100 miles north and visit the fort on Mackinac Island. The only way to get there is a ferry and no motorized anything is allowed on the island, strictly bikes and horses. It's kind of a tourist trap but the fort is cool. So is Fort Michilimackinac, on the mainland in Mackinac City, a restored Revolutionary War era fort. He should be sure to get a pasty while he's there, another historical Michigan thing, the copper miners in the UP had them as a lunch staple, they could be warmed on the shovels of the miners for lunch. Most had their "owners" initials in pastry so they weren't eaten by another miner by mistake. Petosky is very cool and has some good restaurants, I like a fish place there called Scalawags. It's relatively inexpensive and has whitefish and lake perch, both from The Lake(s), either Michigan or Superior. You can't really go wrong with fresh lake fish in northern Michigan. tell him to avoid the fudge on Mackinac Island, BTW, it's no better there than anywhere else. Nancy works at American spoon foods in Charlevoix, a very upscale "on the lake" community. I know Legs Inn is there by Boyne too, it's a well established and respected restaurant serving Polish food. Tell him thank you for me, and I hope he enjoys his trip to Michigan. He's quite a long way from me or I'd give him the nickel tour! Annie
