i'm redoing my kitchen and was considering both. we actually found a wholesale distributor who had the northland on the showroom floor. we didn't like it at all. it felt and looked like an industrial refrigerator - it was awful. my dream is to have a miele, but for $3K more and 3 cubic feet less than the sub zero, i can't really justify it. so i think sub zero it will be!

This is a first but I am going to disagree with gardengal. In the land of ice and snow hardy plants can certainly be damaged by frost. On May 23rd 2014 we had a very unusual late frost and plants I had in the ground for nearly 20 yrs. were severely affected. Hostas were the hardest hit, some turning to total mush. They did come back from the roots. Freshly planted items could take a harder hit. Edited to add - We in cold zones have an additional consideration, the nasty phenomenon known as frost heave. It can throw plants out of the ground with repeated freeze thaw cycles. This occurs with plantings done in fall as well as spring.

Kathy, I will jump in with a suggestion. I would suggest that your DS get renters insurance on it, since it is stored on your property. Or at least check on it. Even if he has to pay you $1/month rent to qualify for renters insurance. It probably would be cheaper than storage fees, and then if there should be vandalism or a fire, he would be covered. Make sure you won't be responsible for damages that might occur on your property. At least check into it. It would be something to check on even if renting a storage unit for anything. I by no means have any legal training, just thinking.

It appears a new porch has recently been added as a front porch, however, if that pic is what you see from the road, then, in addition to a horizontal line to divide that tall wall facing the road needed for curb appeal, you may want to consider recreating your front entry. For curb appeal and practical use, wrap the roof* of that existing porch (that is on the left side) around the corner to a point that is right of the small window but left of the utility pipe/wire. (You could add lattice at the right end of the porch to block the visual of the utility post and back yard while enjoying the new porch and/or entertaining.) You could move your entry door (and the window(s) beside/above/around it) to the wall of the newly enclosed space that is facing the road -- creating that "front wall" of your new foyer to be in line with the rest of the "front wall" of the house facing the road. If you extended the current en try porch roof to cover the existing steps and several feet in front of it, then by wrapping the resulting extended roof around the corner and along the wall facing the road, you'd be covering a ground floor space all the way from steps to about half way across the tall wall that faces the road. You'd need to use taller posts. In lieu of a porch floor, you could add pavers with grass/ground cover between them beneath the wrap around roof . You could also plant a green privacy hedge between that porch and road to create a great outdoor space as well as the horizontal line/feature your tall blank wall facing the road needs. You could always add a raised porch floor later.
