'real lavender,' I picked Neptune over Sterling silver?

I just took home Neptune. I have been on a lengthy and unfulfilled quest for a real lavender rose. The sterling silver had one perfect fragrant and perfectly lavender (real lavender) flower. But I have heard what a good plant Neptune is, and I was afraid that SS wouldnt have the vigor and bloom power of Neptune. However, I was afraid that Neptune would be yet another "pink" rose that I am supposed to pretend to be lavendar!! I already have, or have tried, too many of those. Such as Heirloom (which I love, but it's pink) or purple passion, or Intrigue, etc, etc. Is Neptune going to be laveder, or did I just buy myself another pink, pseudo-lavender rose?

Neptune is quite lavender here. Not as fragrant as Sterling Silver (few are) but MUCH better plant in terms of both vigor and disease resistance. You will like it. Now quit fretting.

i purchased a neptune in march and planted it in a pot. it is very upright and vigorous and has beautiful foliage for a HT. should bloom within the week. i agree that it is healthier due in part to the shiny leaves

My opinion regarding mauve/purple modern roses will probably be an unpopular one, but here goes: I love the highly fragrant roses in this color range, but I now grow a very limited number of them because of the fact that they tend to be disease-prone. The ones I do grow are grafted (a must), and I grow them as annuals -- one of my very few extravagances. After years of trial and error in my very humid mid-Atlantic garden, I've concluded that these roses are at their very best only as very young plants. Even tho I spray regularly, my mauve/purple roses invariably turn into BS magnets during their second year. I wonder if others in BS-prone areas have similar experiences.

CHARLES DE GAULLE is indeed a wonderful rose. For me, it was promising, but hardly worth the effort as an own-root plant. I've found it to perform very well, however, on Dr Huey. It's one that I'd really like to try on Fortuniana. LILA VIDRI is another one that I've found to be superior as a grafted plant. I think it's classified as an HT, but in my experience it performs more like a Floribunda, ROYAL AMETHYST is a workhorse rose for me. It had a broad, rather than tall, growth habit, and blooms from the base to the top with good repeat even in my heat. The individual blooms, though, are unremarkable here. This is one that gives lots of color, but, IMO, is best viewed from a distance.

Nope......likely he doesn't know a thing about 'Old Sheffield". Old Sheffiend was a way of creating plated ware before electroplating. A layer of copper and pure ( not sterling...but pure silver) were rolled together creating a "sandwich" of silver and copper and things were made from that....and if things were to be trimmed, as in the grapes etc on your tray, those decorations were often made from sterling and applied. Also...often the back side of an old Sheffield tray ot the inside of a coffee pot would not even be plated with silver....just tin or even base metal. And old sheffield often is unmarked and never says "silver on copper" or "sheffield plate" I hope the jeweler with his little dab of acid didn't destroy some of the value of your tray. Never ever allow anyone to dab some acid on a piece of silver.

CoriAnn, this is a brilliant idea!!! I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of Florence D.; on HMF, the photos show a colour that is very washed-out and muddy in comparison to the ones posted here. I myself have become very,very focused onto lavender,violet, purple, mauve roses,after realizing last year that these were the colours that pleased me the most,so I'm on the alert for good ones in this category. I'm even thinking of changing my present policy and actually trying an HT or two!

Neptune is not pink here, it is definitely lavender, moreso than Sterling Silver (horrible plant, and I tried three) ever was. I'd post a photo, but mine is finished with the first flush already...

Neptune was always pink-ish for me. That's why I never replaced mine when they died of canker. Lagerfeld, Fragrant Plum, Melody Parfumme, and Sandra Renaissance are all real lavenders. Lagerfeld is very difficult though in that the blooms are very easily marred by rain, thrips, and Japanese beetles. Melody Parfumme didn't make it through it's first winter. Sandra Renaissance is difficult to find. So I'll recommend Fragrant Plum as the best lavender that you are likely to run into. My favorite lavender is actually Blue River, but it has a red edge to it and is also hard to find. I bought Sweetness this spring but I haven't seen it bloom yet.

Thanks for the encouragement, kstrong and dianenj. I will try to relax now. Ah.... Just took a deep sigh of relief. I have seen a couple of whole plant shots of Neptune on this forum, and they were astonishing! Ofcourse, all from warmer regions, but it still made Neptune look like a healthy plant. Oh, Athena mentioned Melody parfumee. I have that one too. Love it, but still sort of pink! I mean, maybe it turns lavender with age. It is probably better than some of my other pseudo lavenders, but I still would not classify it as the real thing.

I have it next to Belinda's Dream which is a very pink rose... it looks very lavender next to her...

Neptune is lavender for me... no way I would describe it as pink or mauve. It's been a healthy plant for me so far... it doesn't have the bloom profusion of other plants, but it's got gorgeous dark green foliage and of course that SMELL. Mmmm.
