troy-bilt xp, honda engine, rwd w/ larger rear tires
Comments (6)Welp, other than general reviews of the company itself (I know, I know - its MTD), I couldn't find any inbiased revies for this exact model, with either the honda or kohler engine. Thanks for the tip about the autochoke on the honda engine, i'll have to make a mental note if/when it happens to me - I did buy the mower late this evening, and made a few test passes with it. My front yard is the levelest of what I have, with a good 20' section that is perfectly flat. The fastest gear selection is a little TOO fast for me to actually mow with, but for moving it from front to back, etc, its great. out of 4 gears, #3 is just a hair faster than what I normally use on my rider - which on a brand new mower with a brand new blade, worked perfectly. #1 and #2 were fine also, just slower as expected - but nothing I would consider a 'grandmothers pace' - tho I wish it did have at least one that slow.. Even with the big 12" tires on the back of this RWD mower, I couldn't hold it still with it trying to pull. Tires wouldnt break loose and spin on level ground, it actually pulled me over the 3rd pass when I was playing with it. It also pulled itself, and me, up a 25 degree slope, about 40 feet long. Let's hope she holds out for a long time to come - for someone used to using the $99 Murray special, it's like comparing a Pinto to a Corvette. I understand lots of folks like some of the other names like JD, Snapper, etc - and I imagine that would be like stepping from a Pinto to a 200mph Maybach - I'm fine in the middle class with the 'vette....See MoreGCV530. Comments (5)Your symptoms seem to indicate partially restricted fuel flow. It get's enough fuel when under no load conditions, but the carb bowl level slowly decreases under load, when the governor is "opened up" and the engine requires more fuel. IF the problem disappears when allowed to idle for awhile, it would tend to confirm that. Did you use the correct fuel filter? I don't know if that engine has a fuel pump or not, but IF it's a gravity fed carb AND you used a more restrictive filter designed for a fuel pump engine..... Could you have messed up on the carb and gotten the needle in wrong (like upside down) That could "possibly" cause some flow, but not enough under load. That's a somewhat unlikely scenario though, BUT- IF you have a gravity flow system, smell the oil for the presence of gas since it would tend to keep leaking through while the engine sets and eventually end up in the crank case....See MoreHonda HHT31 trimmer choke and loss power whan gas!!
Comments (6)Hi, I have a Honda HHT31S trimmer. 3 Years now and very reliable. My guess, and it is only a guess is that maybe one of the throttle setting screws on the carb cable has got a little loose. Check page 28 of the manual. Try tweeking that. Maybe when you gas it, you are pushing the air valve a little too far. Hence too much air, not enough fuel hence works great at idle and not so great when you pull that throttle cable. As a quick check, try pulling the throttle halfway OK there? then like 90% of the way, OK there? If it is, seems like a minor tweak to the throttle cable adjustment nut might do the trick. The other issue, less likely is OLD petrol. I always use a fuel stabilizer addative like STABIL, available at Home Depot. Red in color, looks like cough medicine. It could be that if you have not use your trimmer in a while, the fuel gummed up some of the carberuttor jets. Best, Mike....See MoreCraftsman tractor-Honda engine.
Comments (9)Yes, mownie, it is a vee type engine. So, on monday, i will pull the engine shroud to inspect it further, to make sure there are no bare wires that i can't see, now. I suppose those coils are expensive, aren't they? The engine runs ok-no noises, but misses. Not a steady miss, just sort of a stutter. I had another tractor here that had one coil unbolted from its mounting area. The tractor engine would start and run well, but if i shut it off for a half an hour, it would not start, until maybe an hour, or a day later. I had installed new bolts to hold that coil in place, but it didn't help. This engine is a Honda 16.5, V-twin, OHD cam, Pressure lubrication. Model:917.273502 Serial no. 100903C001117. There are new spark plugs in the engine, so they weren't the problem. This problem is an intermittent miss when running. The tractor can be run and driven, and will mow well--its just the "miss" that has me stumped. I haven't done a compression test on it yet. Mainly because my tester is broken. And, at this stage of life, i don't want to invest in one! (89 yoa) Guess i'll go see Old Uncle Joe, and borrow his tester. Thanks! RJ...See MoreLVCS4
