Where is voltage regulator located?

2003 MTD Yardmachine 13AN668G205

B&S 17 HP OVH 31C707-0154-E1 Code 03 510ZA

Need help locating the voltage regulator; tried following the wires arnes but could not locate. I have the operator manual and the parts manual (which indicated a regulator rather than a diode) but it doesn't show the location.

(Battery is not charging; measured output at battery terminal without the battery measured 4.5 voltd DC but >25v AC)

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Should be a little silver box mounted on the engine near the carburetor. You should read around 14.5 volts dc at the battery with everything hooked up and the engine at full throttle. If under 12 volts, disconnect the regulator and check across the two yellow wires, not to ground. If you see around 25VAC the regulator is pooched.

Well, I removed the shroud & oil dipstick, the wires seem to go under the flywheel.

(Canguy: there is nothing by the carburator)

From the picture, I assume the regulator must be under the flywheel? I did not want to remove the flywheel!!

Without a battery, I measured 6v. DC and 30v AC (at he battery terminals) It just dawned on me that the 6 volts must have been sufficient to keep the fuel solenoid open as the mower kept on running when I removed the battery.
Also, I assume that if the solenoid was shorting and loading the generator down, I would not have measured 30V AC.

I agree with Lurk. Choosing the correct orientation of the diode before you make "hard connections" can be done using a simple test light or volt meter. Here's how to do it. Connect your test light clamp lead to the battery positive post of the starter solenoid. Then, hold one lead of the diode pressed against the test light probe (so that other end of the diode becomes a "probe"). Touch the free lead of diode to the black stator wire. If the test light burns........turn the diode around because it is conducting the wrong way. The diode needs to be oriented so that current can flow "out of" the alternator windings, but not back the other way. If it is turned wrong, it is a dead short. Looking at the picture you posted I would suspect it may have been caused by someone connecting booster cables in reversed polarity, or connecting the battery backward. It may have been that the diode "innocently" became shorted of its own volition and thus got fried...........but usually what you see here is the result of human error (as described above). There is a Briggs diode part number (Briggs calls it a harness) But there is a caveat if you do that part # on YOUR application. That part comes as a "2 diode,1 input wire, 2 output wires" (red and white) configuration which allows for DC positive on the red wire for charging the battery and DC negative on the white wire for headlights. If there is no need for the white wire (no lights) you will need to tape that white wire up soundly so it can never short to ground. There seems to be a hint that Briggs made some kind of change up on the tri circuit wiring in 1988 and that might account for how come you aren't seeing a white wire on the beast. For it to be a "true DC only" system you would be looking at a RED stator wire and a RED connector on the engine side. This post was edited by mownie on Fri, May 3, 13 at 19:04

It's possible that the assumptions here are all wrong. First of all, if it's a fuse that's blowing then the problem is over current and not necessarily over voltage. Noise on the line, if that's a problem, is likely introduced after the 24-volt transformer, as a power transformer by its very nature, being an inductor, will likely not pass transient high frequency noise, it's too slow to react unless it's part of a switching power supply design or an oscillator. The 3-legged packaged regulator (DC) referred to is likely a TO-220 (maybe a TO-92) package. A small value (capacitance) bypass cap may help if in fact there is some sort of RF transients being introduced (after the transformer secondary winding). Even though 24-volt AC feeds this device, it most certainly must convert this AC to DC (probably 12-volt) in order to function. There should be regulation and bypass built into the design. Another possible but expensive solution might be 'Whole House Surge Protection' installed right at the load center (electrical entrance). This should provide protection from voltage spikes originating from both sides of the load center (utility & internal). Besides, now that we have microprocessor controlled HVAC systems with ECM motors, microprocessor controlled 220-volt stoves, ovens, dryers etc., how else can we protect these sensitive devices from spikes? It's not just your large screen A/V system that needs this type of protection in today's world. You can't buy a Monster Power Bar for your HP! Another advantage of Whole House Surge Protection is that it ties all the separate grounds of the electrical utility, telephone lines and cable lines together to one common ground. Have you ever tried measuring the voltage (AC) between these grounds with a Fluke? The comment that is most interesting is from mike_home regarding humidity and static electricity, though I suspect the source of the problem lies elsewhere. Back to this Nest thing, what's directly on this fuse's circuit that's drawing so much current? This could be a design flaw and may not be up to you to solve. SR

low voltage lighting/electrical -- DIY help needed!

We are finishing our kitchen which has been rough wired for low-voltage lighting (we are getting the 'Ambiance' under cabinet lighting made by Seagull). We have three places for under cabinet lighting, and our electricians (who did the rough-in) installed just ONE transformer in the basement directly beneath the kitchen. All the undercabinet lights are on the same circuit. I can't help you on the other questions, though - my cabinet maker hasn't marked for the upper cabinets, and I'm not doing plugmold. Good luck!

According to the photo, your stator configuration is what Briggs calls "Dual circuit". This style has 3 amp, unregulated DC on the RED wire, and 14 volt AC max on the black wire for lights only.

Mownie is right, there is no regulator in your system.Put an ohmeter on the red wire from the plug to the battery. If you get the same reading when you reverse the connections the diode is blown.
The alternator has no effect on the ignition.

(in the wiring schematic of the manual MTD 769-00642aPARTS.pdf ppage 24 it is labeled regulator; so I assumed the machine had a regulator.)

So -- where is the diode? This may be a moot point; I assumed the diode/regulator was shorted and inserted a diode as shown in the picture.
The system seems to work ok but I still would like to know where the original diode is located.

Briggs offers a replacement "diode wire" which I have found as part number 391507.
Briggs says the wire should be soldered and heat shrinkable tubing to cover the splices (or tape).

The engine in the photo below is essentially the same engine as yours.
