What is the difference between Green and Organic?
Comments (39)ORGANIC: CHEMISTRY: relating or belonging to the class of chemical compounds having a carbon basis; "hydrocarbons are organic compounds" GEOLOGY: being or relating to or derived from or having properties characteristic of living organisms; "organic life"; "organic growth"; "organic remains found in rock" MEDICINE: involving or affecting physiology or bodily organs; "an organic disease" GARDENING: of or relating to foodstuff grown or raised without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides or hormones; "organic eggs"; "organic vegetables"; "organic chicken" CULTURAL: simple and healthful and close to nature; "an organic lifestyle" In gardening, the definition of "synthetic" is pretty stretched (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_(food) ) and some truly nasty "natural" compounds can qualify, such as rotenone and 20% acetic acid and copper compounds. READ the labels and the MSDS of these things. "Harmless", "natural" pest controls like Bacillus thuringensis kill butterflies ... if you want butterflies you have to tolerate caterpillars. Also, some of the "certified organic" fertilizers and additives are shipped long distances, and have a big "carbon footprint". ******************* "Green" considers the environmental impact of producing and shipping and disposal of something, and does the minimum necessary to solve a problem: Maine kelp extract, green sand, or Italian dolomite powder might be fabulously organic and OMRI registered, but when shipped to Arizona they are definitely not "green" because of the shipping. The all-natural, locally produced Ironite (mined about 100 miles north of here) is a lot greener. The soil sulfur I use is a byproduct of the copper smelting operations 100 miles east of here (when they cleaned up their emissions, the found out they were collecting substances they could purify and sell for a profit!) My backyard compost is REALLY GREEN because it's converting waste that would be trucked away into fertilizer. It's not strictly organic, because I use small amounts of ammonium sulfate (by product of natural gas production and purification) to boost the nitrogen content, but it's local....See MoreHelp dilineating differences between Whirlpool FLs
Comments (4)If you're interested in the Precision Dispense option (from the three models whirlpool trainee pointed out), the WFW96HEA looks like it might offer some good features. For $200 less the WFW96HEA offers a lot of features. With the WFL98HEBU you're paying for the LCD screen. Samsung makes eye catching machines but I read a lot of issues with them not standing by the customers after the sale and when you have issues (same with LG). Parts seem harder to come by, machines are made in Korea. Here is a link that might be useful: Precision Dispense...See MoreHydrostatic Relief Valves?
Comments (3)The hydrostatic relief valve can be installed in the main drain pot or in the floor of the pool or both. In Houston, it is common practice to install hydrostatic relief valves in the main drains and/or the floor of the pool because you are very near sea level and you have high water tables. What is more important is weather or not a deep drainage ditch (DDD) was installed around the perimeter of the pool leading to a deeply submerged sump pump to deal with drainage around the poolsite. Either that or a dewatering system of some sort. The soils you describe are called vertisols and are highly expansive soils that require the types of construction techniques I am describing here. You are correct, a gravel bed should have been installed underneath the shell of the pool (10") and especially beneath the Hydrostats as repair_guy describes (but 4'X4'X24" with a deep drain leading to DDD Sump). The difference here in texas is that we have to deal with vertisol type soils that exist on only 5% of the world, I guess we're the lucky ones?...See MoreDifference between Grohe Concetto 31349DCE and 32665DC1?
Comments (0)The price of the 31349 is more than the 32665 not sure why? Is the price difference worth it? The first model mentions automatic returning and a lower max flow rate of 1.5 gpm whereas the 2nd has a 360 Manual Showe Head Rotation and faster Max flow rate of 1.75 gpm....See More- 16 years ago
