Lady in Red Salvia - collected seeds

I really love this plant and collected a bunch of seeds for ws'ing. However, I've read somewhere that they are sterile??? So I didn't want to waste time, soil, containers, etc and decided to do a "sprouting test". Here are the results! Looks like almost all seeds germinated after a few days! Rest of the seeds are going outside!

I have some seed from some great red salvia that I grew last year. I'm currently doing a germination test with them. I'm new here so I'm not sure how this works yet, but I'm mostly interested in vegetables. I haven't had a chance to make a seed list of what I have or want yet but I could probably spare some if you still want them.

I missed the spring planting, but I just bought a 4-pack of Lady in Red salvias to try out. I was going to transplant a few of them into the garden, but I'm not so sure now. I moved one into a small pot(the only plant with active bloom spikes). Of course, after growing in a tiny little container in a greenhouse for a few months, it is a somewhat skinny root-bound plant. I loosened up the roots before filling in the pot with a good commercial soil. The problem I'm getting is the plant is struggling when it gets even a little of the hot summer sun(this was the case before transplant as well). I've been watering it regularly and the soil has remained moist. This morning the leaves and blooms were getting wilty after only one hour of direct sun. When I moved it to the shade and gave it a bit more water it quickly perked up. The last few hours I've put the flower in a mostly shaded area under a tree that just gets a few peeks of sun. I just went out to check and several blooms that looked healthy this morning had fallen out. Just touching or breathing on the blooms caused most of the others to fall out... although the leaves were fine. I certainly can't transplant the other three flowers into the sunny garden if they are just going to wilt and die. I'm going to add some miracle grow to the pot and transplant the other three flowers to a large pot. A couple questions: Should I expect my salvias to better tolerate the hot sun once the roots are able to grow out in the new pots? They are never going to be as healthy as they'd be if I started them with properly spaced seeds, but, considering they are supposed to be full to partial sun flowers, I'd like to be able to get them some sun. Also, are the blooms supposed to be so fragile? How long are individual blooms supposed to last before they fall out? Thanks.

That'll work for Lady In Red, it's a plant in a big hurry. My plants started in March were in bloom around the beginning of June, and heavily by mid June. This should be treated as an annual. Black & Blue is a cultivar of Salvia Guarantica so you need a cutting or a plant to start from. It might make it through your winters if you have well drained soil on the sandy side. Folks overwinter cuttings all time of this one indoors, because north of zone 8 you can't be certain it will be back. Overwintered indoors plants can be blooming when they are set out in May. Those plants often suffer some set backs after transplant, so you'd be safer thinking early July with heavy blooming not beginning until mid to late in the same month.

I have been harvesting and sowing 'Lady-in-Red' for several years. The original seeds were purchased and I don't notice much difference between the original plants and ones from harvested seeds. I think I read that 'Lady-in-Red' is supposed to have more flowers on the stem than the straight species, but I didn't notice that with mine. You can also get it in other colors like white and coral with different cultivar names. I grew 'Coral Nymph' last year instead, but noticed the hummingbirds prefer the red kind.

5 or 6 years ago I bought a package of seeds called Red Texas Hummingbird Sage-I recently read on Sampleseeds about a salvia called "Salvia coccinea 'lady in red' (red texas sage)" and I'm thinking I have what you're talking about! It is an annual, but reseeds, only not every year for me, so I always collect the seeds. Really a beautiful plant and the hummers LOVE it.
I'm VERY new to seed swapping, but if you want to trust me, I have enough for 2 swaps for SASE - I don't have a trade list yet because I felt I had nothing to trade but the common stuff. I'm planning on posting a trade list in the fall, when I have collected more seeds. Also, I WSed everything else that I've collected except for these! The seeds were collected in Fall 2010. Congrats on your seeds! Close to 100% germination is great. I like doing germination tests. It's nice to know that your seeds are good, especially if you're going to trade them.

Lady in Red reseeds for me every year. It does very well in our hazy hot and humid summer weather around DC.

I grew the Lady in Red salvia last year. It was from a SASBE offer from graanieb. They were beautiful. But mine were tall and looked like a stalk. I collected the seeds and those from Coral Nymph salvia too, to replant this year.

I'm thinking of pinching off the tops when they're young.

Do any of you do this? I do it with many flowers, but didn't know whether I should with the salvia.

Erika, yes you can pinch them. I pinch almost all the annuals and give many of the perennials a haircut in early summer to make them shorter and bushier. Works well, but delays the blooms a little bit.

I grow Salvia 'Lady in red' and 'Coral nymph', also Yvonnes every year, but boy do the slugs love these plants in my garden. I'm going to have to be more diligent about apply the Sluggo around these plants this year.

Treating with iron phosphate before planting time solved my slug problem.

I think I made a mistake here, when I posted "two swaps for SASE." And I'm very sorry. The small amount of seeds being sent don't merit a SASBE (which is what I meant to say), having said that, if anyone would like to try the seeds, email me with your address and I'll get them out to you.
