Black- Eyed Susan & Gloriosa Daisy

I seem to be reading contradicting information on the internet regard Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed susans) and Rudbeckia gloriosa. I had always thought BES to be perennial in my zone. Some says perennial, while others say biennial. Some says Rudbeckia gloriosa is perennial while other hardy annual.

I think the definition should include the words "if happy in your location".

I would define all of them as short-lived perennials. They will fail to over-winter if the soil is too moist--they don't like wet feet in winter. Sometimes if you don't dead head black-eyed-susans they won't come back--maybe it's a survival instinct that if they haven't set seed they'll try, try again.

And sometimes, and wrongly too, a plant which is typically annual is called perennial because you find it in the garden the next year--because it is a reliable reseeder. It not come back from the original roots but has successfully reseeded, perhaps even making its own little colony.

I found this year that rudbeckia hirta can sometimes bloom itself to death. Gloriosa daisy is just a common name for the same plant. If you want true perennial rudbeckias, try R. fulgida. It comes back reliably year after year. R. hirta is trying to do the same, but only on plants that gave me a couple of blooms, rather than the big display that makes me like them.

They (hirtas) generally last 2 years for me. They stay green all winter, sometimes a few leaves will get slimy but the plants survive. The 2nd year is bigger and better, then they do just suddenly die out by late summer. If they last a 3rd year, they just don't thrive. My norm now is to yank and compost them after 2 years.

First year plants starting to bloom in June '08. You can see some volunteers coming up, too.

Really pretty! Are those Irish Eyes? Indian Summer and
Dbl Gold do well for me. Your grass looks good enough to eat!! LOL

Mine might be fulgida then. My uncle has huge clumps and tons of new babies every year. It seems to be the same plants coming back as well as new babies. Unless I've purchased it, most of my seeds are coming from my uncle/grandma's massive gardens and they just aren't very good at knowing what varieties they have.
