Strange unknown tropical tree.

Hello! I have this little tree that i collected from the wildest part of my Family's Lands (Northern Mountains of Puerto Rico). I have cultivated it for the last 4 years and have made an extense research looking for the ID of this tree. Still, remains unknown for me. I think it must be a native tree, since i have found several of these trees growing in the wild, and have managed really well to grow and develop under the dense vegetation in the wild (Tropical Rain Forest).

Can anybody ID it, or maybe give me some opinions? Any help is very welcome.

The flowers look a little like small callistemon ('bottle brush'), but it's probably something else. Take it to your local university botany department (or a good picture like these) and they should be able to help you. Post it to a local garden club, or ask at a nursery in the area.

Hello Lucy! Thanks for your advices!

Thanks to the help of other memmbers of this forum i found out that my tree belongs to the genus Casearia. Wit hthe genus name i made more research and i think that it may be C. decandra, or C. ulmifolia. Now i have to wait that my tree produce fruits and then i can have a better ID. I will post the pcitures of the fruits as soon as i get them;0)

What tree to buy in tropics

Grapefruit (C. paradisi) and pummelo (shaddock, C. grandis or C. maxima) are quite good in the tropics. Among the mandarins, I've seen good-quality 'Ponkan' in the consistently hot tropics. Sweet oranges (C. sinensis) won't develop very good color without cooler weather, but the flavor should be fine. With any of these, flowering may be light (and therefore lower fruit set) than you'd get in a climate with more pronounced seasons. A strong dry season followed by wetter will help stimulate a bloom.
