Craftsman Riding lawnmower

I have a Craftsman LT1000 Riding Lawnmower. Ive replaced the sparkplug and replaced the battery about 3 months ago. It would not start the other day so I tried jumping it this morning. I eventually got it to start and ran it for a short while , shut it off then tried to restart it again. This time it would not crank like before. Anyone have any ideas or had similar problems? should i leave it running longer if i get it started again. Do you think its the battery not holding charge or the alternator not charging the battery or somthing i havent thought of, which is quite possible. Im a computer guy not a mechanic. Any ideas or helpful things to try would be appreciated. Thanks all.

The place to start here is to fully charge the battery. If you have no charger, it is a good investment. Or take it to an automotive or battery store. They will charge it for you and then load test it to confirm its condition. Maybe the key was left on? A basic voltage tester can help you determine if there is a draw on the system and if the engine is charging the battery as it runs.

what does it do when it won't start?

does it just keep turing over but never fire off?

does it turn over just a little bit, then just hum?

does it just click?

odds are the valve lash is out of adjustment. this will not allow the compression release to function and the engine compression is too much for the starter to turn it over.

Well, the repairs are not too difficult for an experienced mechanic, with the proper tools, a floor jack (For raising the tractor, not your floor), and a lot of patience. A rudimentary education in mechanics is quite helpful, too. Also, a large box of tools will be helpful, along with the knowlege of how to use them in the places they are needed. somebody here will probably give you the address of where you can send to get the drawings of how the machine works, where everything is, in it, and where and how to send for manuals, etc. Be patient--somebody will be along to help. They are basically the same blade, the 198-059 is ground a bit different. The Oregon blades are thinner than OEM and apparently do not wear as well. You get what you pay for.

Has the mower been started? If not just siphon the fuel out of the tank and replace with fresh gas. An auto parts store should stock or be able to obtain an inexpensive siphon hose, DO NOT use the old trick of trying to start the siphon by sucking on the hose. An outboard remote tank hose will work with the couplings removed. If the engine has been run and has diesel in the carburetor, with fresh gas in the tank run it at part throttle no load for 15 minutes or so to clear it out.
