Autumn Purple Ash

I have two autumn purple ash trees in my back yard. They were planted in the fall of 2004. One of the tress has leaves(since end of April) and the other has none. I scratched the bark of the tree without leaves and it is green underneath. There are buds on the branches that have been for a while now but no leaves. Suckers are starting to sprout from the bottom of the trunk of the tree. Is my tree dying?

Emerald ash borer is decimating ash trees in eastern North America. You might want to look that up and read about it, in case that is what you have.

I've taken some photos of the tree that didn't get leaves. I also included one shot of the tree that appears to be okay. I think the emerald ash borer could have made it's way to Nebraska. What do you guys think?

The first thing I'd investigate is drainage in the area where the tree was planted. Soaked soil plus high temperatures with direct sun can really stress plants, especially new transplants. Ash trees are susceptible to some fungal diseases and borers - more information here.

Both are tall trees, over 60'. The ash is being decimated by emerald ash borer elsewhere on the continent. If it comes to your area, your tree might then be lost. Both flower, those of the tulip tree are merely larger. Both also drop all leaves in autumn. Everything drops something, but some are more noticeable or bothersome (smelly, prickly etc.) than others. Maybe have a look at the plant selection guide portion of the Sunset Western Garden Book. There is a table of trees that indicates those which are thought more suitable for patio use, which is the kind of thing you should be looking at if you are worried about tree litter. There is also a sort of arboretum around the state capital building in Sacramento, where you can stroll among signed, often mature examples of various trees. There are also arboreta on University of California campuses, such as the one at Davis. The USDA experiment station at Chico also has some nice, identified tree specimens. Such places provide a chance to walk up to and touch garden trees, see in person what they grow into and how they may behave. Visiting one of more of these collections might result in a particular kind jumping out at you, as seeming to be the one for you.

My first question is how appropriate your climate is. Since you don't mention your Sunset Zone or location, we have no clue. Like most eastern ashes, white ash needs some seasonal variation (heat in summer, cold at night in winter). It performs poorly in mild climates. I doubt if your neighbor's water drainage is affecting it adversely. Eastern ashes are accustomed to plentiful summer rainfall and they are difficult to overwater. If you have clay soil you should expect slow growth. They will typically survive in clay, but prefer the kind of loamy soil that is prevalent in their native range.

the leaves on this tree are already looking scorched. I found something on line about Anthracnose and this seems to fit. Any treatment? The tree was just planted a year ago and leafed out beautifully except for the browning leaves. And it is only May!

When I've looked it up on the internet before there was something about small vertical cracks in the trunk being one of the signs of emerald ash borer. Contact your local Nebraska Cooperative Extension office for identification assistance, if it is new to the area and it is what you have there they will want to know about it anyway.

We have had the same problem with our autumn purple ash trees. We have four of them and only one has leaves this year. Just like you, I scratched the bark and it is green underneath. I contacted the nursery we bought them from and although they had not heard of this from anyone else they did say they did not think it was the ash borer. We live in Wisconsin and we had a very harsh winter with a lot of snow and they felt the trees never went dormant due to the snow cover. Then we had a bad cold snap this spring right around the time the trees were supposed to bud out. They thought they may still bud out during a "second budding cycle" but that has not happened yet. Not sure what the winter was like in Nebraska, but that could be the reason? I wouldn't pull the trees out; chances are they will be ok next spring. If I get anymore information I will post it here.
