Interesting. I was just thinking about using my raised planter (18" tall) with milk jugs since you can't transplant some veggies...love to hear what people think!

I have raised veggie beds that are 4x4. No, I haven't used it with a coldbox over it. Seems to me it should work though. I did place all my wintersown milk jugs in it last year and it seemed to work fine. Not a very good picture but maybe you can get the idea..

I'm not using a coldbox over my 2x6 garden but I did put in a mini-hoop greenhouse :-) It's still very warm down here in South Alabama on the Gulf Coast. But we get a couple of night of freezing weather so I can just cover the nin-hoop greenhouse with plastic to keep things from freezing. Right now I have Romaine lettuce planted in my garden. I have some Chard, Mustard, Turnips and 2 other varieties of seed sowed indoors. I'll transplant them to the garden in about 4 weeks.

No coldboxes here, but we do have 2 raised beds about 3' x 6'x 18" high which we winter sowed "directly" late last winter (started mid-March, after most of the snow melted. One box contained both Sugar Snap (snow peas) & shelling peas. The 2nd box had greens which we just planted as the need arose. Over time we had spinach, Buttercrunch lettuce, a nice Chard, + 3 crops of a nice mesclun mix.

These planting boxes did not get added to the WS container count because the multiple varieties were all sown directly, and at different times rather than in mini-greenhouses & being transplanted as is usual; but the process sure worked well for us.

I believe y'all have too little cold for winter and we have way too much! I send all of you best wishes for your winter-sowing efforts.

I move my box wherever I want to keep things growing when it's cold. Direct-sown spring salad greens and herbs can be run 4-6 weeks ahead of schedule. Mine are terraced beds on a slope. My boxes are in constant use Nov-April, then get stored for the summer. Right now, I'm starting WS mache to fill a few vacancies.

I planted a few cucumber seeds in my raised bed and put a plastic dome cover, vented, over them yesterday. I have my reservations but I was anxious to start something.
Did anyone else try using their beds?
The video on the winter growing box was interesting. I wonder if it needs to be vented during the winter.

the seeds I planted directly into my raised bed sprouted right on schedule, and are doing great, the ones that were covered that is. The ones I planted beside them, and didn't cover are just starting to have to have a single sprout!

Rahvamil,I think what you are proposing would work but is it really winter sowing? Cold boxes and cold frames have been used for years to extend the growing season, especially for green leafy vegetables which are cool season plants e.g. lettuce. IMHO, covering your seeds and using the residual heat in the earth does not constitute Winter Sowing. Winter Sown seeds are exposed to the elements, freezing temperatures, snow & hail, whatever until nature signals them that it is time to sprout. Some of them will not sprout without that freeze/thaw cycle. They would sprout without covers, but the covers protect them from birds, being washed away, etc. during winter. Most vegetable seeds,if treated this way would not survive.
