You'll have better luck with peas if you plant them in early early spring, while it's still freezing even as long as the soil has a good consistency. I planted a second crop as well which produced a few beans at only 6 inches high or so and then withered and died. They definately hate the heat. I would think about planting a fall producing crop soon, they take at least 70 days to mature and we generally get a freeze in the end of September. You'll still be able to harvest into October as long as the temps stay above 20. Good luck. I think we are all brave souls for gardening in Minnesota. No game plan, I am afraid. I live in Palm Desert, CA and have mostly sandy soil. I just basically planted the seeds in the ground in late May and sometime in mid-July I had 5 sprouts. I didn't know what I was doing so I planted about 20 seeds at varying depths and watered like any other small palm in my yard. I think the heat really helped. If it helps at all, I planted 6 date palm seeds in 3 gallon pots, 2 seeds per pot using palm and succulent soil from Home Depot 5 weeks ago and I now have 3 1-2" sprouts, one per pot. I have irrigation running to the pots that waters 1/2 to 1 gph for 4 minutes 4-5 times per day, everyday. It is regularly 110 degrees here now so keep that in mind. The pots get full sun about 4-5 hours a day, filtered sun for about 2-3 hours a day, and shade the rest. I figure it may be similar for the Canary's, but I am no expert.

Nichole, I had a preschooler in my summer camp named Oliver. I love that name! Sophie is going to be a huge help for you. It's harder for 3 year olds to comprehend a baby coming until it actually arrives. When our 2nd baby arrived, our 3 year old promptly told us to send the baby to grandma's house. Brooklyn If you get the chance head over to the winter sowing forum. The last frost date for this area is April 19th or so, but that doesn't guarantee we won't cold temps late in April or for that matter early May. Last May was a total washout,remember? Usual safe date for outdoor planting is Mothers day, or even later. Hope that helps you some. Alberta
