What happens when a mini tornado meets roses on an arbor

Rose and arbor fall down and go boom:

I was able to stand the arbor up. Luckily I didn't have too many canes attached to the arbor, so it was easy to get up. But the arbor was screwed into the fence and we will have to replace some fence slats, if not the whole gate.

At least now it will be easy to prune. No ladder needed. I was planning on cutting these guys back (that's Reve d'Or and Veilchenblau on the right, Sombrieul on the left).

If there are any older canes this would be a perfect time to thin them out before raising the rest of the canes back into position.

Although roses form the primary collection and focus, my vision is of a garden filled with trees, shrubs, lawns, vines, veggies and fruits, a place of bounty where fragrance, color and texture rule through the warm months of the year and hints at those elements the rest of the year. As I shaped the garden in its beginnings, I wanted to emphasize a feeling of welcome, a place where we and our friends could play, relaxing in privacy and comfort (and have a beer or two just like Harry!), a place with trails where the dogs and cats could race and wander through borders, beds and along the perimeter. Birds needed to be safe, and bees welcomed, so many of the plants reflect their preferred habitats. I imagined a garden where neighborhood children would love to visit, munching on whatever was in season and taking bouquets home to Mom. We needed several different air paths to throw balls for the dogs to chase, and lots of hidey holes for the cats to dive into after they teased the dogs into a game of chase. Seating is very available, somewhere to sit in every roomÂ of the garden, and lush green lawn beneath the cherry tree just for lollygagging. ThereÂs room for a game of croquet. ThereÂs always a hammock to rock in and thereÂs always an orchard ladder set up near the fruit trees so that the kids can have the joy of a climb and help us thin the apples or pick the cherries, depending on the time of year. The roses are really the heart of the garden. You can smell them out on the street as you drive or walk by and they climb so high and in such profusion that they can be seen from a block away - itÂs important to me to share the bounty with the neighborhood, too, and I love visiting with our neighbors over the roses, sharing bits of history and knowledge about OGRs. It was my plan to take up watercolor when the garden matured but IÂm more focused on weeding and caring for it than I have been on learning how to paint. I surprised myself with this garden. I thought it would be more chaotic (in an artful way, of course!) with lots of hanging canes dripping with rose blooms, narrower pathways that felt as though one might be lost in a jungle of roses, nowhere near the square footage of lawn we have, more of a transformative experience as though a visitor had wandered into a strange and wonderful world far distant from the suburbs, almost as if it were an abandoned secret treasure. Alas, one canÂt also have children and dogs in such a garden, and so, at least for now, our garden is instead open to the sunshine, spacious in its layout and, I must say, VERY packed with plants in its borders and beds. When we are old, and all the children have grown up and the pets are gone on to the Rainbow Bridge, and the garden has grown old along with us, then weÂll have that beautiful chaos. If it will protect my rose's from looking like crap in 125F heat I am willing to try it. I don't get to enjoy my rose's in the summer in the Arizona desert my growing season is when most of you are buired under the snow. I dread summers but have to stay her until hubby retires. I am willing to try a product that claim's it will stop the stress my rose's are under in Jul, Aug & Sept. I will not build a cover in my front yard that I have to take down in the winter and apply and pay for a building permit with my city hall. A product I can spray would be easier and less expensive. If I lived in Zones 5,6,7 & 8 I would poo poo this product too but when one struggles with 125F in the hot Az. heat you try anything to stop the roses from being under so much stress. I have tried tons of organic products to help with summer stress to no avail. I am always on the look out for products that are somewhat sold at a reasonable price( I would only need the 16oz size).If you lived here and put up with the ugly leaves, the proliferated blooms you would be looking for new products to stop that too, and they get plenty of water and mulch, I do not feed them in the summer because of burn. I think I will try it, unless someone here has a better idea then building a structure in my front yard. Carrie

At our house, the harvest is hot and heavy right now. We have potatoes and onions curing everywhere, on every flat surface available. Today I'm going to start slicing and chopping onions to freeze for later use in cooking, and then the rest of the first batch of cured onions will go into tubular net bags for storage. The second onion batch needs to cure for at least another week and then they'll get the same treatment. I'm going to send 10 or 20 lbs. of onions and the same amount of potatoes to work with DS on the next day he works, which I think is Thursday, because I've promised his fire station chef a steady supply of fresh veggies. I am picking tomatoes about every other day, and we have more than we can handle at this point, which is a great problem to have. I don't think it will continue to be such a great tomato year for too many more weeks though, because our temperatures are well above the range at which flowers set fruit.) We need a cold spell here. By cold, I mean any weather with highs only in the low 90s and lows in the low 7os. We have enough tomato fruitset that I think we'll be harvesting all we can handle through mid-July but am not sure what we'll get after that. Yesterday we were down in the metroplex shopping for a few hours and we dropped off two Wal-Mart bags of tomatoes for DS's crew at the station which generated a lot of excitement among them, and saved me from having to do any canning yesterday. (I didn't have time.) On Sunday afternoon I put up 8 quart bags of green beans in the freezer, and I'm going outside in just a few minutes to pick beans again. I was hoping it would be nice and cool this morning, but our low temp for the night was 80, so we're starting out kind of warm already and the sun isn't even up yet. Yesterday morning we harvested the early sweet corn, which was the variety 'Early Sunglow'. We got about 75 good ears and a few bad ones that either had been 'sampled' by the raccoons, had poor fertilization because of the heat or something else that resulted in unusable ears. I gave the bad ears (less than a dozen total) to the chickens who were delighted with them, and put the rest in the refrigerator. We ate some fresh last night and will have more today, and I am going to blanch and freeze the rest this afternoon. Some years the raccoons get all the corn, and there's rarely a year in which we beat them to all of it, so I'm very happy with our harvest. I hope we're able to get as many ears from the mid-season corn and the late-season corn, but we'll be fighting both the coons and the corn earworms and European corn borers, so who knows what we'll get from them. Our garden is in the transition stage, where the last of the cool-season crops have just come out (I finally yanked the broccoli and cabbage because they just weren't doing anything at all) and have been replaced with hot-season crops so we'll have something to harvest in July and August. With highs in the upper 90s and lower 100s already and lows in the mid-70s throug low-80s, our weather here feels more like late July and August than June, so I am concerned about the effect of the heat on the garden---but there's nothing we can do about the heat except go with the flow. The bigger issue is the lack of rainfall. There's been no rain here for about 3 weeks our last rainfall was a half-inch on May 24t), and no good chance of rain anytime for us anytime in the foreseeable future. With 100-degree heat and no rainfall, everything here is rapidly drying out and turning brown, and we are starting to see grassfires. I'm already wrestling with the decision about whether to water or how much to water. We did run the soaker hoses to water the soil/foundation area yesterday, and I'm going to run a soaker hose in the garden today to water a couple of beds, but I am not doing a lot of watering. The problem with trying to keep a veggie garden green in this kind of heat is that the garden becomes an oasis that attracts tons of bugs when everything else is browning out, and we have a lot of wildlife (deer, raccoons, possums, skunks, rabbits, etc.) trying to get into the garden every day and every night. It is going to be a long summer. We have a surging spider mite and grasshopper population too, but also have lots of ladybugs so I'm not overly worried about the mites. The shrub pictured is potato bush (solanum). I found random bushes all over the property, dug them up and planted them about 5' on centers to create a hedge. Once it reached about 8' I started shaping. This one grows fast and flowers. I've also used boxwood (a favorite for appearance and low maintenance), ligustrum, passion vine, honeysuckle, and others. Once upon a time, we had Fortunes Double Yellow growing up a trellis, and spreading out across our roof.

One night we were hit by 80-mph-gusts of wind, and in the morning, FDY was lying in just such a mound.
Except, of course, it was FDY -- with all of those wicked little prickles.

We donned heavy gloves and thick jeans, took loppers, and chopped it up into little teeny pieces.

How disappointing! We've been having storm after storm up North here also. Be careful when wading in to tie her back up and make sure your tetanus shot is up-to-date.

BTW, the pic is fantastic! I'm sure it will regain its former glory in no-time, Buford.

You sound so calm, I would be sobbing. What a lovely setting you created and a fully matured vision of rose beauty. So glad you have that photograph.

Of course they will grow again, no doubt even better. But oh the work ahead...
I just had to move a climber but way way smaller. Blood was shed.

Well, I was upset, but as some have said, this is an opportunity to do something. I kept saying that I had to cut back the roses but never got around to it. And there is a lot of old dead wood that was way in the back. I admit I was a bit daunted by trying to get in there and do it. So now I have easy access :) I am kind of amazed how the roses just blew off intact, I guess because I just had them laying aross the top of the arbor with limited attachments. Maybe if I had the arbor secured better, it would have lasted.

Honestly we were having problems with the gate latch. The ground under the fence must have shifted and the latch is a bit off and you have to raise up the gate to close it. So maybe now with the arbor out of the way we can fix it. And Veilchenblau only blooms in the spring anyway. At least it's not as bad as when my Teasing Georgia trellis broke at the base. I had to cut the rose down to nothing. But it grew back. They always do.

That's an impressive sight, I must say, and your calm is impressive too. Last year I decided I wasn't even going to tie my (relatively puny) 'Paul's Himalayan Musk' up into the oak tree it's supposed to be climbing until March had passed, as we often get violent wind storms then. Of course afterwards I didn't attach it at all. It's twining through wild shrubs now and looking rather handsome.

My heart sank when I saw the "after" pictures and even more when I saw the gorgeous "before". It's great that you can see all the positives in this (I'd be whining endlessly), and fortunately they will grow back, and probably bloom more than ever.

Well we worked on the roses and fence all morning. Unfortunately it's in the 90s today, so no long pants or sleeves:( My husband worked on removing the damaged slats of the fence. I first separated Sombreuil, which was on the left from Reve d'Or. That was fairly easy. Then I had to de-tantle Veilchenblau from RdO. That was a bit harder. Luckily Veil is almost thornless, but the canes are very long and flexible. I removed to very old thick canes from the base and a lot of growth.

Unfortunately I think RdO took the worst of it. I had to cut a lot off that was attached to the arbor to get it off and then when trying to untangle it from itself. So it's going to be a bit bare for awhile. But at least it wasn't loaded with buds or anything. I tried to leave as many long canes as I could. We replaced the fence boards and now just have to reattach the arbor and then place the roses on it. I'll probably tackle that next week. I have 2 huge pile of debris that I have to deal with. But that's for tomorrow. It's too hot and this is my last chance to go in my sneighbors pool while they are away (yes, they let us use it!)

I was shocked to see your roses on the ground! - and you must have been, too, when you first saw it. You are definitely taking this better than I would be. I hope your roses are restored to their former glory soon.

Glad you got to cool down in your neighbor's pool! How fun!

NO NO crying. It's just a plant. In terms of life and real problems this is a bummer..but nothing to cry over. Plants grow back!

buford, that brings back some bad memories. Last year this time one of those came through my yard and uprooted a mature tulip poplar. It almost crushed my neighbor's house. She wasn't hurt, thank goodness, but it was frightening.

That is a beautiful picture, the roses in bloom on the arbor and it sounds like you had a busy Saturday.

I am happy for you that your house and family weren't hurt and I hope your roses grow back quickly. Take care, Gean

Thanks Gene. We weren't even home and don't know exactly what happened. Just pulled in the driveway and saw the aftermath. I also had to cut off a huge pyrocanthia branch that broke off. The worst part was trying to get all the debris down to the compost pile, which is now HUGE. We grabbed a large tarp and piled everything on it and dragged it down there. The rose thorns and the very long pyrocanthia needles made for a very 'sticky' situation. And we will have a lot of chipping to do this fall.
