Compost and Chemical Fertilizers

I am a relatively new gardener. Last year I built a raised bed and filled it primarily with compost I had made from grass clippings and shredded paper. The garden did very well.

This year I added another raised bed, but I did not have the amount of finished compost I had last year so I filled it with a combination of store bought compost and dirt from elsewhere in the yard.

I really liked the idea of making my own compost and not having to rely on purchased products. I've started a worm bin and started making compost tea to add to the garden.

But then a friend recently convinced me that I needed to add 13-13-13 fertilizer if I wanted a good garden. Every couple of weeks I have been spreading some around. The garden looks good, but I can't shake a lingering guilt. Am I doing something wrong? Is this one of those cases where an either/ or is better than a both/ and? I am wondering if the chemical fertilizers are killing the microbes of the compost and vermacompost tea.
