Turning lawn into garden beds

I just joined the Garden Web, and this is my third time writing this message. I hope it works this time and I"m not repeating myself!!

I have tried the lasagna method a few times and it works well (I don't do any tilling but I wait over the winter before doing any planting) but I have tried it under a maple tree in my Montreal garden and the grass and soil stays very hard underneath the mulch so it's difficult to plant. Any suggestions?

Also, how do you recognize Bermuda grass?? I have no idea if that's what I have in the patch I'd like to reclaim for another garden bed.

Thanks! I never use weed killer or poison of any kind in my yard.
