Bigger Not Better?

Is it true that a larger B&B tree is not necessarily going to grow faster/better than a smaller container grown tree? I think the advice is that it takes big trees (delivered and planted by two workers)longer to recover and root in than a smaller tree that hubby could manage to plant?

We have no real shade in our yard. I'm disappointed in what I've planted so far and decided to go out and buy a 'really big tree" to provide some shade/cooling breeze this summer, but is that wise? I'm not even sure if I can really buy a tree big enough for that. I am thinking of a maple for dense shade and/or Honey Locust for light shade and easier fall cleanup. It needs to stand up to heavy wind unprotected. All the trees I really love need more protection than I have.
