Ooh! New series from Optimara
Comments (6)hello everyone! this is my first post here, but i just wanted to say that my local garden center just got in quite a few of these and they are quite lovely! the blooms are so unique. so far they only have Annabelle. i know this post is a few months behind but i wanted to share, i have put myself on AV restriction so i did not purchase one for myself. it was very difficult to walk away!...See MoreOptimara's Little Gems
Comments (7)Hi Korina, I have Opt. Little Gems(only 4 of them). They are minis and yes, Diamond has quite a big leaves. I like them since they are like most Optimaras strong and vital plants. I think what they said about them is truth about all AV. I have Spunky Trail(micro) which is tiny in tiny pot but plant in Oyama pot has leaves tvice as big. Even with that it is the smallest I saw. I keep some my minis in 1 oz pots and they are happy, blooming and stay little. If you put the same plant in bigger pot than it very soon starts to grow bigger. I think there are not many natural micros there. I think pots are playing huge difference. I like minis and micros - I think it is incredible to see such a baby to bloom...and I try to keep them small but happy. If you have experience with some really tiny let me know the name. From my plants tiny are: Teeny Bopper, Spunky Trail, Tiny Moon Goddess, Rob's Twinkle Blue, Tiny Wood Trail and maybe Lil Creeper. I still have some which I think have chance to be very little - but they are still too young babies to judge. They will grow little bit more, than they will go into bigger pots to see if they will stay tiny... I like bigger plants too, I just wish there was some list of micros so one can know for sure which are micros and which minis. Alena...See MoreOptimara Everfloris
Comments (23)Hi Begonia Thank you for posting the question. I have found the space violets to be satisfactory in every way--the bloom count is amazing. Along with the Everfloris, seeds from other Optimara varieties were also sent into space, such as the Rhapsodies and some of the States series. I have a few that are in constant bloom, with a full bouquet of blooms that is much larger than any other AVs. Several of my AV friends, who are not collectors, they just enjoy having a few AVS, raise these for the heavy blooming. They are very easy to grow. They rest just a short time in between bloom cycles. I have also had success in raising Optimaras from leaves that I got from Selective Gardener. They are very sturdy, with thick petioles and they grow rapidly from leaves. Having a few of these in full bloom to brighten up the collection is a joy. Comments (11)Oh I know, and you are absolutely right but there is much behind me wanting one of these. My partner and I are huge science nerds. My love is biology, theirs is space. I know these are not the most spectacular violet out there (I only want one for that reason), just that the LDEF project was incredibly exciting to both of us. My partner also edited most of the articles published around this, and good portions of the writing is their work. Also, they did all the photo editing for this project, and most if not all of the photo editing from the shuttle trips from 1988 to 1995. Some of my love's works are in textbooks and Astronomy Today. These plants are special to us... not for how they look, but for the way they combine our passions. For these reasons, there will always be a place in my collection for one of these overgrown funky violets. :)...See Moresnappyguy
