Japanese Maple Leaves Curling

I posted this on the Maples website, but I know there are a lot of wise gardening souls here, not to mention this forum is pretty active. We have had a lot of rain here in the Northeast most of spring/summer. My Japanese Maple "Bloodgood" has been in the ground about 4 years and was probably 3 feet high when I bought it. Just a few days ago I noticed that all the leaves have curled up. They've not turned any colors yet, just curled up. I don't see any insect issues, my guess is a fungal disease or distress from too much rain. I've got lots of large hostas encircling the base of the tree and they've been there since I planted it. They've never caused a problem, yet that's not to say they never will. Now I'm rethinking my strategy and wondering if they are contributing to the problem. Should I remove the hostas? Is planting anything at the base of a Japanese Maple a bad idea? Or do you think this problem is caused mainly by all the rain? Thanks.
