Parts for B&S 12.5 hp engine (?)

I need to find out what I need and where to find it.

This has been a good tractor for me and my 3/4 acre. I run Gator blades on it full time and I even mulch mow standing corn stalks and okra with it. Can't remember exactly when I bought it and part of the engine ID tag is worn away (probably an errant corn stalk got under the cowling).

My friend said the engine got overheated and the valve seat popped out and was holding the valve out.

So I need to buy both valve seats or whatever the valves ride in and out on.

Here are all the numbers I could get off my magic machine:

Thanks for hearing me out. I've read enough on this forum to know there are experts here and indeed found my Gator blades from info here. I would appreciate the help - push mowing with a borrowed 21" mower isn't working well for me and the remaining 8' tall corn stalks are laughing at me.

I suspect the model number is 252707. If the engine got that hot, remove the head (you need to anyway)and see if there is any piston or cylinder damage. If the seat is not too badly worn, you can push it back into the counterbore. Stake it with a centre punch in three places then use a flat punch to peen the surrounding metal.Oh,and replace the head gasket.

I personally can't be trusted to change a battery out without messing it up.
I'll print out any and all responses to this thread and give them to my friend. If he wants new parts, then I will have to buy them.
I'm paying him back by pulling poison ivy, oak or whatever in his newly acquired adjoining lot.

I came across this thread by searching for the same answer a lot of others on here are seeking. After reading the entire page, I had to join to point out an observation in regards to rusyj14's comment that "Occasionally, the help doesn't work, mainly because the help seekers can't follow instructions" But, the fact is, the seekers Are following instructions. No disrespect meant, as I see many have resolved their problem with your help. But the others that are still at square one have done as instructed. They have repeatedly stated those instructions back, as to what they had done, but with no fix. And as you also mentioned for them to do, they Are here asking for help, but it seems their posts are going unanswered. From someone who at the age of 10, or younger, got his hands on his first lawn mower with instructions from his Dad to only tear it apart to see what was inside, with a Tecumseh that had sat out in the weather since who knows when, with a crankcase full of rain water, but defied his Dad and got it running to have it mow his grass for the next six or more years, I've been accustomed to getting things running. But having already done what all others on here have suggested before finding this thread, I am leaning towards the flywheel magnets having somehow lost their strength. It is the only part not bought new to replace. I thought I had read somewhere else that someone was able to compare the strength between a good set of magnets and weak ones by use of a fish scale and how much it took to pull away from it, but I couldn't find it again. I'll be completely dumbfounded if a new correct flywheel does not solve my issue either, as I've mentioned, it is the only part I have not yet bought to have everything brand new with regards to the ignition system. If I had a shop nearby that could magnetize it, I would go that route, but it will be cheaper to purchase a new one than to invest in the shipping and shop time to have it done.

Model 289707 type 1201-e1 Thanks! I checked the switch. Looks like the original harness doesn't match up to the new switch. Letters to wires were all mismatched. So I took them out and hooked them up to the switch according to their letters. Still wouldn't crank but wasn't blowing fuse. I did the solenoid bypass thing where you connect the two posts and it started spinning up, then I turned the key and it cranked right up. So that's a first and good I guess. When I try to restart it, it tries to spin up for a second before I turn the key again. If I let it sit for awhile it will start up again without issue. Possibly weak battery? It's been cranking up my 4 wheeler fine.

The 42 series and 46 series are the same size except the 46 series cooling shroud has a 1/2" "bump out" on each side of cooling shroud to cover the heads with larger cooling fins on them. I happen to have 2 rebuilt 42 series but am not crazy about trying to ship them and the shipping would be, probably in the $75 range or more. Walt Conner

Sounds like you got a stick stuck in the works. Might of jammed a stick up in the lower part where the engine bolts on. Or maybe the belt has come unglued, and wrapped itsel around the works, up where ya can't readily see. OR: the rubber tired wheel might of seperated, and isn't working right. How about the clamps that hold it together? Are they loose? Did ya check under the belt cover, the belt that runs the cutting blade?

So the engine was built Jan 5th 199?
IF you can better identify the character "E" in the code to the number it really is, it may be easier to narrow down which tractor you have.
It's probably an 8 or 3????

I'm thinking the engine could also be 280000 model???

Is it a side valve (flat head) single cylinder?

IF the cylinder block is not wallowed out too much, you can stake the valve seat back in as above. You should then lap the valve in and check the valve stem clearance.

Also IF a valve seat did come out it is likely due to heat as your friend says and I would remove the cooling shroud from around the cylinder and be sure that the cooling fins are clear. There is a very good chance they are not and failure to clear them will result in the same thing happening only worse this time. I don't think a new seat is going to help unless it is an over size seat in which case the block needs reaming to accept the over size seat.

Definitely bought in early '90's from Home Depot. Single cylinder - I don't know about valve arrangement.
Looking at code#: could possibly be a 6 or 8 that I thought was an E. Very badly worn tag.
