Comments (7)"Or should cranking produce spark from flywheel magnito ? " ALL spark requirements are taken care of by the Magneto. Never let any battery or alternator current get to the ignition system. Disconnect the kill wire system either on a terminal which probably is just below the cooling shroud above the left Intake Manifold connection to engine block OR it may be a wire coming out the side of the cooling shroud on the side opposite the right cylinder, back side. IF you can't find this, disconnect the small wire from the bottom side of the ignition coil under the cooling shroud. This will eliminate the problem being in the safety switch or ignitions switch. IF there is no spark after doing this then the magneto, Magnetron, coil is likely bad. Walt Conner...See MoreB&S 21HP Intek OHV engine runs poorly
Comments (7)Walt, Thanks for the quick reply. A service manual would be great; I'll email you. It was the exhaust valve that was way out of spec, so much that the valve cap came off! This tractor has less than 100 hours on it. When I saw that, I checked the rockers, pushrods, studs, etc. I've re-checked to lash several times after running the mower to ensure it stayed within spec. I have the intake at .004" and the exhaust at .006". The only thing I haven't done while testing is the gasket around the valve cover. If this were a car I'd check the carb further, but there is nothing to adjust on these B&S engines. Furthermore, I notice the throttle linkage does not go all the way to the idle speed set screw at the lowest throttle setting. Could I have a governor issue? Just seems unlikely it happens to pop up at the same time, right? Best, Michael....See Morecraftsman 46' with B&S 25 hp twin engine down
Comments (11)" It is a bit complicated to say the least. Section 5 is on valve/cylinder properties . . . so I know where the covers are . . . . and once I take them off, what do I look for relative to push rods, etc. From your post, I assume that my problem is most likely going to be in the valve/piston/gasket area?" Are you sure you want to tackle this yourself? It is very likely that a blown head gasket is the problem but you need to remove the valve cover to do that job anyway so there is a possibility that a push rod is bent, something out of place there. To do this job right, you need to have or have access to a torque wrench, preferably an inch lbs torque wrench. Walt Conner...See Morerld788_comcast_net
