mango tree disease in mexico

I have a mango tree I inherited when I bought my house. Aprox 20 ft. tall, I have no idea what kind of Mango. It is inside a compound but gets lots of light and air circulation. It's leaves turn yellow and brown then fall off and have black spots. the bark also seems to be splitting but not falling off or black. The previous owner said it has been like this for 4 years he has been spraying it, under someones advice, occasionally with dish soap diluted in water and says it gets better and then gets worse. He says it has never had fruit, but is in much better shape than it was 4 years ago. I also found that when I watered it it seemed to drip sap, the more I watered it the more sap. I assume it is some sort of black mould/ fungus disease and would like some help. I do have pictures of the tree and the leaves that have fallen off.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems with the tree. Frequently, pest and disease target weak trees, so it isn't unusual for a sick tree to develop multiple problems. The black spots could be anthracnose and your dripping sap could be caused by Verticillium wilt. Both diseases are prevalent in mangoes. To properly diagnose your tree's problems, it would help to have a local expert take a look. Do you have any type of local government or university office that could do that sort of thing? Here in the US, every county (at least so far as I know) has a local extension office that can be a helpful resource for this type of situation.

Thanks for the info. I think there is a ag type university in my area. I'll check it out.

i think Marathon packs several diff. types of mangoes. I"ve seen one box that looked like Kents and another looked like Haden.....yet they taste better than other brands of the same variety. I sprouted a bunch of mangoes from Marathon seeds, looks like Kent, but not sure. The taste was excellent...but then I have never tasted a mango fresh off the tree, so can't compare.

Hi NoraKim - no I wouldn't worry about the spots - you'll find these trees have all kinds of little things that go and go. What I would be worried about is all the leaves that seem to have fallen off except where the budding part of the stem is! Are you giving them enough light? It really seems like they are away from the window and getting too much shade....and how about water? They look like they are indoors - where do you live - could be a problem unless you get them more light

Horticultural oils can be of use in scale/mealy bug infestations as well. Even insecticidal soap can work on the "crawler" stage, that brief time period where the immature insects are leaving mom and going to set up shop somewhere else on the plant. At that stage, they are very vulnerable to such sprays. Mealybug, which the photo looks like to me, is a soft scale. so long as you can get the soap and/or oil to it, you'll clean them up too. Failing these ideas, there are more heavy artillery controls for scale, but I always start with the "soft" controls first. +oM
