Fluid Bubbling Out Charging Battery on Craftsman LTX1000

Craftsman 20 HP 42" Automatic Mower Model 917.272442 Briggs and Stratton Intek engine purchased new in Sept. 2000.

Battery is 2 or 3 yrs. old. Tractor used frequently on approx. 1 acre yard.

Had to charge the battery Monday afternoon but only used for 30 minutes. Went to use it Wednesday afternoon and it was dead again. Key was in off position both times.

When I went to charge it this time (used 2002 Honda Odyssey both times) the fluid started bubbling up out of the bottom of both vent caps. I did remove the battery and when doing so the negative connection was quite warm (the positive was normal).

Besides the likelihood that the battery needs to be replaced, what did the bubbling indicate, and what other parts may need to be replaced, such as cables, the starter or the solenoid?
