hippy, It would seem that there is no chemical fungicide at all safe to use in the summer heat. If you think you have a fungus issue, the only thing left to use is organic. The organic community has been very satisfied with corn meal for nearly 20 years now. I'm not sure how greatly debated it is, but corn meal is the only reason I have a lawn. It was being consumed by fungus for all of 2001. By the time I tried the corn meal I had all but given up. Three weeks after the corn meal, I had new grass growing where it had been dead for months. Compost tea cannot be made in the summer. The purpose of compost tea is to extract beneficial aerobic microbes from compost, feed them in the presence of bubbled oxygen for 24 hours, and immediately spray that tea on the garden. The problem with doing that in the summer is that water at temperatures higher than 80 degrees cannot hold enough oxygen to support any aerobic biological life. It doesn't matter how much air you bubble through, the fact of chemistry is that warm water cannot hold enough oxygen. As soon as you put the compost into warm water, the beneficial aerobic microbes begin to die.

I dont know alot about compost but here it goes...You can compost allmost anything it is just a matter of time and as far as worring about ecoli that would break down after a long time. You could kill it all off by using the hot compost method turning a mound of compost heating up. But ppl say not to compost meat because it atracts animals/pests but if you have it prop. maintained then that wont be a problm... To keep it simple I would not go about composting meats unless you have alot of time. Vegan compost teas work very well and end in a cleaner product.( Alot here will argue this cause using animal products is a easy way to get alot of nuitrents.) Yea from what i'v seen it is fine to put a wooden lid on the conainer you are holding you scraps that are ready for the pile? It will get infested with maggots and flys but once put into the pile it all is a part of the break down. The l/2 HP submersible pump I'm using is intended for draining flooded cellars, ponds, boat bilges, etc., and distributed by Chicago Electric Power Tools. It's powerful enuf to shoot the tea out 30-40 feet. The only fittings I needed were a reducer and another brass thingy to fit to the garden hose. If you wanted to dilute the tea, just run more water into it while pumping. Kossetx, I worried that using a shut off valve to control the spray pattern might tax the motor? I always thought it would be really entertaining to stock the retention pond behind the house with Asian Carp. Those are the ones you may have seen on the news that jump out of the water and fly into passing boats. They'd probably grow legs and walk out of the pond and start eating people.
