Worried about Lady's Mantle

After reading about how Lady's Mantle likes a warm-cold-warm cycle for germination, I planted my containers last weekend and left them in the house. I've been monitoring them to make sure that they're staying nice and moist.

But now I'm starting to worry because some people also said that they had no problems with Lady's Mantle germination just straight WSing them. And I've read that some people have decent germination planting the seeds and growing under lights inside.

Should I move these containers outside immediately, before they sprout? What happens if they do sprout while they are inside? Are they garbage unless I put them under lights and keep them inside?

Thanks for the advice.

Carrie - I put lady's mantle seeds in moist vermiculite in small ziploc bags on 12/18/10 and set them here on my desk until 1/18/11 when I scooped out the mix, put it in milk jugs with growing medium and set the jugs outside. I winter sowed the remaining seeds I harvested directly in milk jugs and set those outside. I wanted to see if a warm period first made any difference in germination. Those seeds in the moist vermiculite at room temperature did not sprout.

The seeds won't sprout just because it's warm--they need a cold period to break dormancy. I'm no expert and this is only my second winter sowing experience but I'd say your seeds are fine. I WS lady's mantle seeds last year when I was a complete newbie and they sprouted but that could have been pure beginner's luck.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'll keep them moist and hold out until the middle of February to stick them in the snow.

You know what's funny--I thought the picture I posted was just similar to the house I'd seen, but today I was in Cambridge and drove by the house in question, and it is the SAME house in the picture! Can't believe I didn't recognize it as the same. I didn't see it at its peak with all the flowers blooming at once, so it looked a little different. So I can confirm as of this afternoon that the border in the picture alternates lady's mantle, salvia, and catmint. You can see a little catmint behind the salvia. Since some of you say that you have had success with May Night salvia in part shade, I'm thinking I might try the lady's mantle, salvia, catmint combo with some variegated hostas at the shadier ends, and maybe some campanulas and balloon flower to provide extra color.

Hello, everyone! I've not seen this discussed among these Lady's Mantle discussions nor do I see a Forum for it. I'm in Central PA, just bought 3 Lady's Mantles at an outdoor sale and was told that they would all fit in a 2' x 2' x 2' container and do well on my mostly shady balcony. I face SW but also a woods that's growing ever closer, so there are a few hours of sun each day and it's dappled. From what I read from the "Lady's Mantle" posts (which do not include container questions so far), the plant does well in all kinds of situations. However, I now realize the container I described to the sellers is 1 and 1/2 cubic ft, not 2. Will the 3 plants still be ok? I have more containers on wheels but also more types of plants. Also, Is this an herb or a regular plant? I've read both. Thanks!!

That is great that you got your plants today rouge. I have always admired A. s. 'Gold Strike', it looks like a lovely plant. I like the deeply cut leaves. I look forward to hearing about its progress in your garden. The 2nd pic was originally three plants plus some that seeded in. I enjoy a good drift when space allows. The two pics are in different locations in the garden and both have been blooming since early June and are not showing any decline. I did have them in one spot in partial shade with very moist soil where seeding was quite rampant. If I had cut the flowers back sooner it would not have been an issue. I have found in too dry a soil they are unhappy and will survive but not have the beautiful lush look they should. Too moist a soil and the potential is there for reseeding if we do not cut back promptly once seed starts to develop. Partial shade with nice rich soil and adequate moisture seems perfect for them and us. Seedlings are quite easy to remove. I had trouble posting earlier. The 2nd pic is from my new camera. I had put both pics plus text and a box came up after finally loading saying the text could not be loaded and to reload the page which I did and pouff, everything gone. There was text missing from after the 2nd pic even after posting them separately.

Cab321, were you able to get your Lady's Mantle to germinate? I'm on my second package. No germination. One Jug in Jan and One Jug in April 14. They are in full sun. Should I put them in shade?

I do not have germination yet either, but I am not worried. I have WSed them beofre and I think they sprouted on the late side.

Mine just started sprouting this past weekend. I potted up the containers in January and left them inside for three weeks, then stuck them out in the snow.
