So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?
Comments (57)I'm broke and out of space but I will be making room for the following: 1. BOULE DE NEIGE -- I've been lusting after this pure snowy white Bourbon for years and now is my last chance. His sister Coquette des Blanches is an excellent rose so I have high hopes for this beauty. 2. CASINO -- among my dwindling list of favorite vendors (Antique Rose Emporium, Chamblees & Heirloom) Vintage is the only one who is offering this fragrant Large Flowered yellow climber. He is replacing one of my Pilgrim's that got choked out by Belladonna last year. 3. ORFEO -- only Vintage and Rogue Valley Roses carry this dark red Large Flowered Climber that does particularly well in the Mid-Atlantic region. 4. SPARTAN -- nobody has this reddish orange VID Floribunda but Vintage. I figured I'd better snatch him up before it is too late. All these roses have strong fragrances. Others that I missed out on are Apricot Nectar VID, Lullaby, Osiria, Rosemary Rose, and Yolande d'Aragon. All these are hard to find but I'm particularly distraught over Osiria. Nobody has it but Vintage. Comments (3)Lila -- I don't know about N.C., but I know that long-time Rose Rustlers are most likely to propagate a rose, and hope to put it in commerce, and remain close-mouthed about sources. I used to think this was odd -- but having now seen what a few people can do to some of these places, I do understand. Anyhow, the best way to find out what cemeteries have roses is to -- go there. :-) You can google something like "HISTORIC CEMETERIES IN [state] and you'll come up with reams of them. Google Maps will pinpoint them for you. A trip to one or two of these peaceful old places makes a good weekend outing for a small group of rose friends -- and if you find roses, all the better. Comments (13)bboy, There is a problem with nomenclature in the musks, in that R. moschata ssp. moschata (the single form) and R. moschata ssp. plena (the common double form) have always been considered separate subspecies, even though we now know one is a simple sport of the other. Too, 'Temple' is a simple sport of the common double, although that mutation doesn't happen as often. So the subspecific ranking is surely invalid, and they probably all ought to be just R. moschata with a cultivar designation. Of course, in informal English, it is convenient to refer to them as the "single," "double" and "Temple" 'forms' of musk rose. I suspect that's where the idea of going to forma came from, and perhaps there is some validity to that -- certainly more than the ssp. rank....See MoreRosa Moschata Plena Temple Musk and other cuttings
Comments (1)- I don't have cuttings, but some advice that I hope will help you, I grow mostly Old Garden Roses and Species roses. A local heritage rose group might tell you where you could take cuttings, locally, from the roses you seek. Three public gardens I've written to have let me take rose cuttings when I explained in a letter that I would be taking no more than 5 cuttings, each only 4 inches to 6 inches long, and by their allowing me to grow more plants they would be helping to conserve an Old Garden Rose or Species, and I am not going to sell the plant I grow from the cutting. I'd take only cuttings: - from a plant that is more than 3 feet tall, that won't miss a few cuttings. - I'd treat their plants with the utmost care and respect. I saw recently that vintagegardens.com, in February 2011, is selling a short growing white Noisette (a Musk rose hybrid) which they named "Reverend Seidel", I'd grow it in a heartbeat. Good luck,,, Luxrosa...See Moregeo_7a
