oriental poppy seeding

I just harvested seed from my oriental poppy. I am NOT into winter sowing so is there some way I can get them started yet this summer to be almost a year old next Spring? Would they need pre-chilling in refrigerator or freezer and for how long? Anybody experienced with this? Thanks! Aniya

Since I am asking for advice please add columbine and primula japonica to the same question, just harvested seed from them also THANKS!

you most likely have a couple bazillion of them ..

TRY IT ...

some in a dixie cup with slits on the bottom

some i a special place in the bed ..

etc .. experimentation is the best way to learn in my mind ...

and then of course.. there is the option of simply letting them fall to the ground.. and moving the babes next spring ....

The ones I scattered in early spring didn't come up, but the ones I winter sowed did. They weren't Oriental though. Maybe just after they germinated they didn't get enough water? Or too much like after a hard rain? I don't experience any damping off when direct sowing outside so I doubt it's that. I attribute my scattering failure to dry soil, but has it ever rained since. It says on the packet to scatter them in the fall or early spring when the soil is damp and cold. Said to sow in circles, and clumps of about 1" diameter and 2" tall can be transplanted. Those seeds that require light to germinate have to be kept moist until they put down deep enough roots, but yours evidently got enough moisture to germinate.

How do you gather the seeds from the oriental poppies? Is there a tuitorial posted somewhere for that? This is my first year growing poppies period and I'm thrilled. I only had the "Brilliant" Red..am I aim to try more in 2011.

Hi Aniya. Last September, I waited for the mature plants to re-emerge from summer dormancy. I used this as my cue, that the soil was no longer too warm & getting just cool enough to sow.
I used a large deep pot, placed it in area with complete afternoon shade & only morning sun, pre-watered the potting soil & then distributed the seeds by sprinkling evenly on top the surface.
Make sure the pot is sitting level, so when you do water with a fine spray nozzle, the seeds don't all wash to one side of the pot. Cover with translucent plastic trash bag, except for daily misting for about one week or so, until you see germination.
This cover helps keep the soil & seeds moist, but also prevents flooding from any heavy thunderstorms & possible damage to the fragile seedlings.
When germination has occurred, remove plastic & keep watered using a fine light spray as needed.
If a heavy thunderstorm is predicted, either move to sheltered area, or temporarily cover with plastic again, to protect the seedlings.
They stay fairly fragile until they are more than a few months of age.

Don't cover your poppy seed with soil. Poppies need light to germinate. Poppies also aren't really tolerant of root disturbance when they are small, so I sow directly where I want them, rather than trying to transplant them.

I just let my columbine go to seed and a bunch of new ones grow every year, so I don't know if they need chilling or not.

I can't help with Japanese primrose. I haven't had those seed around at all, but I also haven't collected seed to try to get more.
