Name this rudbeckia

Does this look like any variety you have seen, or can I name it myself, LOL? For the moment, at least, it looks like it will be short, like Maya or Becky, but it doesn't match any pictures I've found.

Rudbeckia hirta Goldilocks

centers should turn brown in a couple of days.

Well, I will keep an eye on it to see if the centers turn dark. I didn't knowingly plant Goldilocks but with seed exchanges, anything can happen. I didn't see any information online about Goldilocks starting out with a green center.

Ok-thanks for all the nice replies. As far as the Rubeckia "Hortensia", is that annual? Do you know the species type?. About the 'Herbstone', does that come true? The R.triloba I can use. I think I had some growing in my yard last year and tried to germinate it but was not successful. What is the secret to germination? I don't do annuals so won't have anything most are looking for. Up here in Z4a, annuals are not worth the effort for me. I wait all summer to get a few blooms in September. I would post a link to my trade list but still cannot figure out how to create a trade list. When I access my home page, nothing shows for trade list. Bizzarre!

Thanks, everybody for your comments. Yes, scraplolly, that single one does look quite a bit like rudbeckia Becky. But Becky is a dwarf, and my plant is over 3 feet tall. So I suspect that Carrie and Juanita are probably right about it being a gloriosa daisy, as the gloriosas are bigger. (I do think Becky is a clever name for a rudbeckia, however. Rudy would be a good one too!) I was just reading that gloriosa daisies were originally created with either radiation or colchicine. Yikes! See following link. I'm attaching one more photo of another unidentified single type. Just to prove that growing rudbeckias is not all sweetness and light, I should mention that this one has been suffering pretty badly from verticillium wilt. I've cut away part of the plant in hopes of saving the rest, and will have to hope that it works as there doesn't seem to any effective way to eliminate this fungus. Thanks Martha and Ladyrose for having a look. Martha, I think I will take your advice and save seeds because it is a beautiful flower. It would go nicely with some tall Shasta Daisies which I have yet to plant out. Maybe someone will come along with the correct name. That's just one of my little eccentricities.

Go ahead and post your question. If you can, try to find out what the Latin Name is by using the Search Engine. The Latin Name is also known as the Scientific or Botanical name. Simply input what you know the vegetable as in quotations, then space then again in quotations "Latin Name" and there's a good chance something will come up. Why are Latin Names so Important? "...the plant commonly referred to as black-eyed Susan is known by the botanical name, Rudbeckia hirta. The botanical name of a particular plant is usually made up of two parts. The first is the genus, which is always capitalized. In our example, the genus is Rudbeckia. Each genus may contain many different plants. The second part of the botanical name is the species epithet. In our example, the species epithet is hirta. So, while there are many plants in the genus Rudbeckia, there is only one known as Rudbeckia hirta. Taken together, Rudbeckia hirta is referred to as a species." In the case of "kang kung" or "water spinach", "Ipomoea aquatica" is the "species and genus" which refers to both "watercress" and "water spinach". The difference comes with the several subspecies, variety, etc. which is why it is so important to try and track down the Latin/Botanical/Scientific Name because it is universal around the world. This is just my opinion, but since my Goldilocks has the dark eyes from the get-go...

I think this is a cross of Goldilocks and Rudbeckia "Irish Eyes." If the eyes of yours don't turn brown, then it's for sure not Goldilocks. All of mine have the brown eye in the middle and I've not seen one yet with green like this.

Last year, I had Irish Eyes, Prairie Sun, Becky, and Maya, among others, but I did not have Goldilocks. Thanks for providing your experience with Goldilocks. I am guessing a cross between Maya and one of the green-eyes. I want to name it Leprechaun, because it is short and has green eyes, LOL, but I want to be sure it is a cross and not something that already exists.

I bet you're correct. That "Maya" is a dwarf double. That would explain why your new one is so short. I have "Goldilocks" blooming now and love it. Is "Maya" a seed variety? I'd like to try that one next year. These double Rudbeckias are just phenomenal to me. They are the prettiest things in the garden. I have had so many people ask me where I got them. I, of course, tell them about winter sowing. LOL.

"Maya" is a seed variety and the blooms are very pretty. It is an annual, though, as mine did not return. I thought "Becky" would be an annual, too, but it either came back or it reseeded. I need to get more seeds for "Maya," and I am also going to see if I have any left that I collected. Planting the collected ones might produce another interesting cross.
