Brown buds/petals - Cause?

I have many, many roses, mostly inherited, so many of unknown type. I think that I've identified just about every disease and pest known to man on many of them, probably caused by a lack of attention for a few years running, combined with some awful weather conditions --one season of nothing but rain, followed by a season of drought, etc. Also, many were allowed to get quite overgrown by weeds. From what I can observe, Botrytis blight is rampant, and I'm just getting around to being able to identify and treat it. My question is this, though:

SOME OF THE ROSES, PARTICULARLY THE RED ONES, HAVE A DARKNESS ABOUT THE BUD, AND WHEN THEY OPEN, THE BLOOMS LOOK AWFUL -MORE BROWN THAN RED, AND THEY LOOK IMMEDIATELY "OLD" AROUND THE EDGES. IS THIS BOTRYTIS? AM I DEALING WITH SOMETHING ELSE? ON THE WEBSITES I FIND WITH EXAMPLES OF BOTRYTIS, MOSTLY WHAT I SEE ARE THE REALLY ROTTEN BLOOMS, WATER SPOTS ON THE BLOOMS, FUZZY MOLD, ETC. I DON'T EVER SEE WHAT I HAVE, WHICH IS MAINLY DARKENED BLOOMS.

Any help here is most appreciated! Amy
