John Deere STX38 transaxle - repair or replace

The transaxle on my 17 year old stx38 just died. No forward or reverse. I do get a nice :( noise when I clutch, though. Reverse gear had been intermittent for awhile, and braking was not existent, so I knew the tranny was approaching end of life. My JD dealer says it's not worth fixing (a new transaxle is $375 plus labor if he did it). From what I have seen (I looked at the Peerless manual someone posted a link to - thanks), it does not seem like that big a deal to swap a transaxle out. Should I attempt to repair the internals, buy a used transaxle on ebay, or put in a new one. btw, the engine is still strong, belts are new, body is in good shape (the mower body, not mine :).
