Enfant de France - a good rose for Southern California?
Comments (6)Jeri, I'm beginning to think that you live in one of the mildew capitals of the U.S. I haven't had any mildew to speak of and so suspect that your humidity is much higher than mine, which is not surprising since you're much closer to the ocean, and I gather I'm also higher in elevation than you. Still, these are not roses I'd consider unless I hear from someone who is closer to my area. I'm not planning on ordering anything this year but am trying to put together a list of five absolutely outstanding roses for my climate with hopes of ordering them for 2009. By that time I suspect I'll have found room for them. Thanks so much for the info. The way you put it made me smile. Ingrid...See MoreEnfant de France
Comments (8)As to that, Ingrid, I think we make a mistake if we regard "Grandmother's Hat" as typical of the Hybrid Perpetual group. It's quite different in most respects from roses such as, oh, General Jacqueminot, or La Reine, or Henri Nevard, or Souv du Docteur Jamain. To be honest, I think "Grandmother's Hat" is more like "Ragged Robin" than it is like a typical HP. Just my personal observation -- YMMV. :-)...See MoreEnfant de France?
Comments (9)I think of it as a Hybrid Perpetual. I don't grow it but saw it many years ago at San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, it does have a lovely bloom. I don't recall if it had a strong fragrance.... The Hybrid Perpetuals and Damask Perpetuals do well here, they tolerate cold very well. If you like pink heavily petalled blooms, Marchesa Boccella is a fantastic rose for a cold zone, delicious fragrance and a sturdy rose....See MoreNew roses to you that have been impressive this season?
Comments (29)I have a couple of new ones.... Parade Day, not doing too good yet. The chili thrips went after him.... Trying to keep him going with out fertilizing for new growth because of the CT's Bronze Star is doing well.... he is blooming without fertilizing (again because of CT's) Ken Wilkinson, I love your Hot Prince.... I have Hot Princess... Do you know anything about that rose... and how it would compare... I could not find anything under helpmefind.com about Hot Prince. Tell me more about your rose, please and where you got it. BenT, I know I asked you before, but are you sure you don't want to move to Florida and be my neighbor? You always seem to have GREAT looking roses.... I love that Outrageous.... So bright, bold and beautiful. It probably doesn't come on fortuniana... and probably neither does the Well Being... I am not only enamored by the coloring the grapefruit fragrance intrigues me too. Kristine, your Desmona is beautiful..... I am planning on getting it in the fall.... I think Cool Roses is grafting them now... if they take, I plan on getting it on Fortuiana....See Morealiska12000
