hillside staircase

I have a question for which I have not found an answer on the web. Has anyone had to build a lumber staircase on a hill? We have a vacation cabin on a lake. The cabin sits approx. 25-30 vertical ft. above the lake and there is a staircase and a tram that runs down to the dock and boathouse. The stairs need replacing (rot) and are currently anchored to the hill by metal stakes driven into the hill and U-clamps. I could do the same or go with posts in concrete but it is quite a grade and I'd rather not have to do the holes as they would have to be done by hand. Anyone have any better (easier) ideas? Sorry, I know this isn't tractors but I have searched all kinds of forums for answers.
