I doubt that it was fermented solution. These birds empty our feeders every single day. We rinse them out and put fresh every morning. Some times they empty them twice per day! They are thicker than ever this year!

Where do you live Echinacmaniac? I live on the central Oregon coast & we have Hummingbirds all over the place. It's like a circus. And boy do they fight!! lol

Peggy - I live in Tennessee. This was the first time I ever had one of these sit in my hand. I know it's just a young one that didn't have enough to eat. He was trying to hold himself up and get to my flower, but he was so drained. My aunt told me they are like this when they need food. I thought he was dying at first!

What a great picture and a cutie. Hope he's OK. I've got hummers in my yard, but hard to catch them at the feeders this year. They move so fast, sure wish one would stick around to say hello. My husband always says time must move differently for hummingbirds.

GREAT photo!!! We get the Ruby throats here, I have 2 feeders on the back porch. I love standing 2-3 feet away and they'll come right up to drink. Got to stand REALLY still though! Awesome creatures and they are VERy territorial!

I really like these birds and it is always special to see them in the garden.

Agressive, territorial little hotheads they can be, however. :)

We have a pool enclosure and I have plumerias around the pool. If someone leave the enclosure door open, hummingbirds usually come in to feed on the plumeria blooms then get so tired flying around to find an exit. We usually pick them up and lay them on a bush outside the enclosure or net them so we can set them free. We also net or pick exausted butterflies and bees from the enclosure so now we try hard to remember to close the door. Next year we're planning on putting the plumerias outside in the garden to save these wildlife from stress and exhaustion.
