Anyone know what would cause yarrow to keel?

I went to tend an un-tended garden area the other day, and found most things intact and needing to be free of many weeds that had taken over, but what I found most curious was a patch of pink yarrow that was COMPLETELY dead. Brown, crunchy, dead.

I have yarrow in other areas of my gardens, and even lining my vegetable garden in "weed form" (since I didn't PLANT it there, but it's taken over...but I'm ok with it).

Any ideas? This is a smallish area...maybe 10 feet by 8 feet...good composty soil to start the bed several years ago (on top of already very fertile soil). I just tossed down some cardboard, and about 8" of compost to make the bed. Everything else is doing fine (sedum, sib. iris, helianthus, phlox, daylilies)
