M. grandiflora isn't really a swamp tree, Donray. You don't see them growing naturally on permanently soggy soil, although they can grow close to creek banks in soil that gets real soggy for short periods of time. The type magnolias that grow on permanently soggy soil down here are m. virginiana/sweetbay - they grow right in the bottom of the hollow here, and I see them growing in bogs on the coast. I'm also surprised at how thin and sandy the soil can be and/or how dry loamy soil can get and mag grands still don't show any signs of stress. The bad place on your mag grand looks like the spots I get on my cactus when I overwater them. I don't know if they're caused by overhead watering, but I doubt it - I imagine they're caused by long standing 'wet feet' without any period of (relative) drying out, which could be caused by your overwatering them or your pots not giving them proper drainage. I'm always surprised at how wet plants can still be at the roots even when they seem fairly dry near the top. You can get a more accurate reading of the pot's wetness by sticking your finger in the drainage holes in the bottom to several inches. Of course, it's possible that your mag grand's bad spot was caused by an external injury, but if I were you, I'd be careful with the watering. Sherry

Patrick: Yes. I keep it in a bathroom so that when I towel dry off, I am staring at that plant all whole time. It seems to love the very humid bathroom conditions. Thanks for all the kind comments and help. I just love this one. When I first bought it, it did not have colors like this at all. So it is all taking me by suprise. Boy can Hoya become addicting based on just leaf shape and colors alone! I hope it flowers too. I think it might, if I keep it in that spot. I have not have the laser surgery to eliminate floaters, but I have a feeling it might work. I had 4 floaters that floated across my field of vision for almost 30 years. Last April I was told I needed laser surgery to release pressure in my eyeballs, due to a narrow angle that made it difficult for proper interior drainage. I don't have glaucoma, but this procedure was recommended to prevent glaucoma from developing. The surgeon shot each eyeball at least 6 times with a laser to create microscopic holes to release pressure. I noticed immediately after the surgery that my biggest floater had suddenly disappeared! Although I still have the smaller 3 floaters, the most annoying one vanished and has not returned. So I'm thinking when he was zapping out holes with the laser, he hit it and it disintegrated, or it was at least propelled right out of my field of vision. Obviously I can't vouch for the actual floater surgery, but I can testify that my worst one totally disappeared after being 'zapped' just coincidentally for a completely different reason!
