Last year was only my second season with Sugar Moon. It was stingy with blooms its first year, but bloomed much more last season...but not as often or as plentiful as my PJPII who is almost always covered in blooms. As Henry pointed out, its growth habit is much different than PJPII. Sugar Moon was almost 9 ft tall by end of its second year in my garden, and for the most part, only bloomed on top of those long canes; whereas, PJPII is around 5 ft tall, bushier and blooms all over for me. I love both of their blooms and their fragrance, but Sugar Moon is not a pretty bush to my eyes...would be better in back of a border with a shorter rose or perennials in front of it.

I haven't grown Liv Tyler, but I do have Sugar Moon. Just my second year growing it, though. It didn't bloom much its first year, but was a vigorous plant. It has really shot up this year...definitely back of the border in my climate. I would say mine is over 7 ft tall and around 4 ft wide and just in its second seasonâ¦hopefully, it wonâÂÂt get much bigger. I'm 5'6 and can't reach the top of it with my arm completely upstretched. Strong canes that haven't broken yet with my bending them down to deadhead or cut buds to bring inside. It does give me some flowers lower, but most are at the top of those long, tall canes. ItâÂÂs been a decent producer this yearâ¦not really big flushes, but consistently has a dozen or so blooms on it. We had an uncommonly wet spring and early summer this year. It rained almost daily over a long period of time. Sugar Moon did not handle the wet weather well here. Almost every bloom was ruined from all the rainâ¦either balled or rotted before opening completely or turned to mush in the rain as soon as it did open. I havenâÂÂt had that problem with it since the rain slowed down, though. Huge blooms with extremely strong fragrance. Blackspot is a big problem in our humidity, and I do spray. Sugar Moon doesnâÂÂt seem to need spraying very often though to stay clean here.

I loved Sugar Moon so much that I bought 3..... however, I am down to one... One died in my flood last fall.... and another one died by growing backwards a couple of years ago. They can get 6 or 7 foot tall here.... but I learned NOT to let them get that tall because of the canker. It seemed to me when we have our gale wind (or even just heavy wind for several days) that SM starts to get canker..... I think when his canes get whipped around it caused them to get it.... not sure, but it sure seemed like it.... I now TAKE extra long cuttings of his flowers to try and keep it short..... my bushes have all been pretty narrow... but I realized that the height of mine is probably due to my all year long growing season. I absolutely love this rose .... but it is hard to maintain. Here in Florida, mine gets just a little over half day sun.

I haven't found that Full Sail has been hardy in my zone 5 garden, so while it might survive in zone 6b it might not reach much height and is likely to die to the ground over winter. I've successfully overwintered Sugar Moon last year, but it was too young to do much blooming. On hardiness, I'd give it the definite edge. I suspect that Full Sail has a more classic HT style bloom, but if it won't grow for me I don't have much of a choice. Cynthia
