tape and plastic wrap question

Good Morning all,

I have only done this winter sowing for one year. I have used 2 liters and milk jugs and plan on the same this year. I use packing tape on the jugs but it doesn't seem to hold for the hole winter. Is there something else that I should be using? I have 31 milk jugs in the yard at the moment and have a bunch of 2 liters to do. Or do I just put it on and don't worry about it. I also used ribbon to tie the top and bottom down in case (or should I say when the tape fails).

I was thinking of using the tp rolls that Nancy Drew mentioned. Great idea. Small compact, minimal space. I have lots of day lily seeds. However, what kind of plastic wrap would I use? I'm thinking that the regular clear plastic sandwich is too thin and wouldn't last.

As for the tape to hole milk jugs...duck tape rules!. As for 2 liter soda bottles. I make some 1-2 inch vertical cuts in the top and force the top into the bottom. I fits snugly and does/t come off untill I take it off.

Last year was my first year WSing, and I experimented with all types of containers and cutting them different ways. The goal was to cause the least damage so that the container would be re-usable.

Duct tape is too darn hard to get off, and I don't plan to use much this year. In most cases, a 2 or 3 inch piece is sufficient to hold the container together. The clear plastic packing tape worked fine for me, just make sure you apply it when the container is completely dry. With both kinds of tape, I fold the end a little on itself, so there is a little "tab" to grab and remove it later.

I do the same as MissKimmie with the 2 liter bottles. Cut them in half, and then put 2 1.5" slits opposite each other on the top half. The top then spreads apart a little and fits quite snugly over the bottom section and no tape necessary.

My favorite containers are the large clear salad boxes, which don't require any tape at all, and are the tops are the easiest to take on and off. I just slide the top under the bottom of the container when it's time to remove the tops altogether.

I have used masking tape, put on sticky side out, to stop crawling insects on my small fruit trees. I have plastic collars around the trunks as a guard from my weed eater and the earwigs and ants crawl undert neath them to get at the trees sap leaks. The masking tape only lasts a month or so but, its cheap and always available.

We have to recognize that it's always ok for the grower to do whatever he wishes with his plants because they're his plants, but when we look at various procedures from the perspective of what's best for the plant, we'll find an emerging pattern that takes advantage of the plant's increased energy levels and tries to minimize the effects of low energy levels. For most houseplants, the highest rate of increase in energy occurs between Memorial Day and July 4th, and the plant's highest level of reserve energy would occur in August, so any significant work (hard pruning, root pruning, full repots) are best done between Father's Day and Independence Day. Potting up (as opposed to repotting), minor pruning - removing a wayward branch or two or pinching, can be done safely whenever the tree is healthy. If you were removing more than about 10$ of any one of the tree's foliage, it would be best to wait until early next summer. Foliage is where food comes from, and your plant needs foliage to meet current energy demands and minimize demands on energy reserves so the tree isn't playing catch-up when late spring rolls around. 1) Why would I want to slow the trunk's thickening? Is it just to encourage an attractive taper? It was just a notation - a tip you could use if you found 1 trunk being inordinately fat when compared to the others as being unpleasing to the eye. For bonsai artists, it's important for the lowest branch to be the thickest, and for branches to grow subsequently thinner as they occur closer to the apex. Since trees are usually apically dominant, they want to concentrate 3/4 of their energy in the upper 1/4 of the tree, so it's up to the grower to slow the top down so the tree is forced to channel energy into the lower branches. The same principle applies to slowing down one of the trees in your grouping. Remove some of its foliage - some of its ability to make food - and growth slows in that trunk only, allowing the others to catch up. 2) How would I direct a branch to vertical? Everything about this plant suggests verticality. Below, you'll see a picture of a maple with an obvious sacrifice branch. In this case, the branch will never be a part of the composition. It's there only to thicken the section of trunk immediately above the 'chop' because the taper is too pronounced. You're looking at the back of the tree, so when that fat, unrefined branch is removed, the scar won't be seen from the front. The small secondary branch emerging upward off of the fat primary branch and has been directed to vertical (initially by wiring it upward) is the future moneymaker. BECAUSE it is growing vertically, the plant will funnel an extra measure of growth energy into it and it will thicken the primary branch faster, which in turn will thicken the trunk faster. Refinement on the rest of the tree will continue as usual, & the primary sacrifice branch along with the secondary branch will simply be removed when the desired measure of trunk thickening has occurred. Keith, I will be real honest here, do you want your Greenhouse to be a success or failure? If you want it be successful, find the money to buy the greenhouse grade plastic. It will be well worth your time and money. I used plastic from the the hardware store and it degrades in about 5 months. After two months, it will start to rip and you will spend more $$ in tape than if you would have bought the greenhouse plastic. This year I built two hightunnels out of PVC pipe too. The only time the plastic ripped was when I had some failures of the pipe and it poked through it. I taped up both sides and it looks good as new! I think if you use the shrink wrap you will be wasting your time. If you spend the money on the frame, finish it off and buy the plastic. Just my thoughts, but I will never put anything but greenhouse grade plastic up again. In fact, I am buying another roll on Monday for my 4th high tunnel. Jay

I'm a newbie, too. That wrapping sequence Link worked great...and really helps. I can see now how storage can happen without taking up my entire basement. I'm going to test the Temp in my basement fridge to see if that can be the most stable place till late February. I'm excited about the pre-potting ideas I've read here, and may try using newspaper lined nursery pots for individual Tubers that show signs of sprouting. I *insist* on having bloom earlier next year! At this point, I'm really only concerned about cutting into the tubers - without damaging the parts that may form eyes. I have seen some photos here that show how to cut thru the stem first - thanx for posting those. Having the right tool will help...I think I'll use a sharpened fish knife for the detail cuts. Another Question: Is it better to wait till early spring to mail Tubers in pre-arranged trades - to let 'em rest?

In terms of clear plastic for covering containers, I stay away from plastics such as saran wrap since their elasticity is too much for our rain and snow amounts. Some thin plastics are tough so I may use them.

I recycle a lot of things around the house. Some of the Christmas packaging provided great heavy clear plastics. The inside clear bag in cereal boxes is great. Clear grocery bags are good. Our newpaper comes every morning in a pink see thru bag so I use those too. If I run out of things to recycle, clear plastic garbage bags are used, but that rarely happens since there's so much plastic at home and especially at my workplace.

I also find duct tape to be hard to remove for the most part, but I have noticed that on the containers that sit out there forever, due to my procrastination, the tape comes off much easier. So sometimes, I open the milk jug while leaving the tape on the bottom section, and then let the bottoms sit in a recyle bin for a few weeks in the garage, and then strip the tape off. Not a big deal for me since I often have a backlog of recycling to put out anyway, as I bring home the recyclables from work so they don't get put in the trash.

I do try to use a cloth tape, like a book binding tape, etc., instead though, if I can find it and if I have the extra $$ for it. It holds very well and come off much easier than duct tape. I've also used packing/mailing tape and hockey tape when in a bind.

I use a clear duct tape from walmart, last year I taped ALL the way around the jugs LOL I WON'T do that again, I had to use a single edge razer blade to gt that off!!! LOL live & learn ") The plastic I used last year & still have some this year is from a chair we had got that was covered with it, if ya go to a furniture store they usually have extra plastic wrap for the asking, & also the plastic that you cover windows with for the winter is good.

I also like to use recycled plastic bags, newspaper bags, bags from the grocery produce dept., a great thicker plastic bag clear on one side--the big bag holding multiple tp rolls from Costco--fits over one of my plastic containers, etc.
