I think this year, I'm going to content myself with old standbys:
foxgloves
oxeye daisies
columbine
shasta daisies
hosta

for veggies:
leeks
kale
Swiss chard
lettuce
tomatoes

So far, I've planted all natives to support the pollinators. I'll plant annuals later in the spring. I'll try to pull together a list, since I haven't been keeping track as I've planted.

Here's my list: rudbeckia, foxgove, poppies, and larkspur. I want to try balloon flower and campanula.

Seattlesuze, your garden looks outstanding. Mine is a fried crunchy mess. I did not properly dig up and amend the soil when I started planting fifteen years ago and many of my Clems have heavy competition from Douglas fir and arborvitea roots (neighbor's on fencelines) Our summer was hot and drier than normal and we were remodeling our house and I'm too embarrassed to show pics. Do you have a pic of your porcelain vine with berries??? I just saw my first mature specimen this fall and it was amazing. I didn't know that teal was a color really found in nature.

I should not have look at Queensland. By October I will have persuaded myself that since I once proved I could bring tulips into bloom in the South, I should do so again. Somebody show me some Iceland poppies, and some hyacinths, Quick! Baby Buffy ate the potted tulips last year before I ever saw a blossom. I just put some of my marrow seeds in pots two days ago. I'm growing a different variety that Bernard lavery sent me this year called a crocodile marrow (very bumpy), and I'm growing marrow seeds that Richard Hope sent me. Once those seeds germinate, I'll be potting some more. I don't plant all of mine at the same time to avoid any major disasters. I usually break up my plantings into 3 or 4 sets, spaced about a week apart. I'm probably going to grow some giant marrows from Robinson's Mammoth Onion, and possibly from Exhibition seeds as well, but they will be in a later set of plantings. They are a lot of fun to grow, and you get a lot of marrows per plant. If your growing season is long enough, you can cut off the giant you grew, and it will start re-growing more marrows. If you cut them off while they are only 10 inches or so, they are great for eating. I personally like the flavor of them better than zucchini. I don't like them when they are full sized though. They become quite watery and they lose their flavor. When they are small and the skin is tender, you can eat them, skin and all. I'm trying some of the small varieties (table dainty, etc.) in another garden for food only. eseeds.com is having a clearance on some varieties, so you can get them a $1.00 a pack. I'm not sure why they aren't popular in this country. They are relatively easy to grow, you can use them for food, and you can compete to grow giants, and they don't take up as much room as pumpkins, and they are a managable size (getting as large as 135~ lbs. at max).

Tomatoes. Plum, regular (Both of which my father-in-law started too many from seed and gave us the extras. He does that every year. :) ), and cherry (in the kids' gardens they have Super Sweet 100) "Diva" cucumbers. I love them! We pick them when they are still small and there is no need to peel them. They are very thin-skinned. My pole beans (Kentucky something) are only doing so-so. The cucumbers are blocking most of their sun, I think. We had broccoli which just went to seed a few weeks ago. And Sugar Snap Peas held on for a few weeks longer than last year. I pulled them out when they started getting powdery mildew. And a few hot peppers. Cayenne and Jalapeno? (I don't remember what the other is) I should probably start some peas again. Depending on our fall weather, I might get another crop and the kids like to munch on them. Me too! Kimberly

'Giant Shirley' - Foxglove, Fuji Pink - balloon flower, Virburnum, Lilacs, New Millennium - delphiniums, Milkweed- incarnata, Verbena - Obsession Mix, Lynchis Viscaria, Lynchis Vescucia, Standing Cypress, Pacific Beauty-Calendula, Hoary Vervain, Hairy Mt. Mint, Lovage, and Borage. School has started this will be it for a while.

I used to have Lynchnis Viscaria - German Catchfly - in a past treasured garden. It was one of my most favourite plants, and this year, when trading with Greylady, she sent me seeds as a surprise. Loved it!!

Aside from the treasures I will be sowing from Greylady, I will also be sowing goodies from Gardens North. I love some of the unique plant seeds they have and this year will sow;
Verbascum Densiflorum, Bombyciferum, and Eriophorum - love the giants in this family. They attract so many bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Digitalis Parviflora - Love a perennial Foxglove. Another favourite from the past.
Corydalis Cheilanthifolia
Papaver Somniferum
Penstemon Nitidus
Angelica Ursina - Wish I could get some of the Angelica Gigas, but this is good too.
Molopospermum Peloponnesiacrum - LOL! Try pronouncing that one!! It's Striped Hemlock - really pretty.
Aquilegia Canadensis - No, not every Canadian has this beauty in their gardens. :O)

I will also be going through some old stashes of seeds, but this is a rented property and I am responsible for the landscaping and outdoor property upkeep so have to consider I will be spending time doing those lovely duties. :O)

I am doing mostly natives for the pollinators as well. I adore the hummingbirds and can't afford a fortune in plants that I have to over winter,.so I'm trying to get as many different natives in there as I can. Also milkweed and other host nectar plants for the monarchs and others. My list includes

I may find a few more in my seed stash. The black prince snapdragons usually winter over for me, but this very cold winter has killed them all off, so I'm sowing more. The Canary bird vine was one I tried unsuccessfully to start under lights a few years ago (pre-WS). The seeds are old, but I figured I'd give them a shot. If they don't come up WS, then I give up on them. Too many other fun things to grow!
