Celebrating my OGRs this spring
Comments (11)Thanks everyone for the wonderful compliments on the roses! I've been awed by the terrific roses everyone else has posted here, so it's fun to finally be able to chime in with contributions. I can definitely attest to the hard work that went into this, Randy, but since I tend to be a "plopper" and believe in letting roses mostly fend for themselves, no spray, I can't take that much of the credit. A lot of rose gardening in my world involves getting out of their way and letting them show their colors. Floridarose, I don't find that my Sambuca (elderberry) seeds around at all. Perhaps the Black Lace variety is sterile? Or maybe I just have it thickly planted enough to discourage seedlings (smile). I do trim off the flowers mostly when they're done, but I'm sure I miss some high up and I've never seen them seed around. Florence, don't give up on Darlow's Enigma. He is a great one for dry shade once he gets established - I've had really good results from a variety of shrubs and hybrid musks in partial shade. Ingrid, Jeri - I totally agree with you about the water making a huge difference in the growth, survival, and showiness of the roses. I'll post a picture from last year's drought to highlight the contrast in years. Basically nothing is blooming in the same spot as the MAC combo above except for the annual salvia, a few Champlain blooms, and the intrepid Bad Worishofen (Pink Emely) who's my energizer bunny all year. I always plant with the water crystals for new roses to ease the stress of a (usually) dry season, but even that isn't enough for the kinds of dry conditions you all face out in CA. Heartiest sympathies on what sounds like a dryer than usual year, and keep up the search for roses that do well in your conditions. I'll respond in a second reply about the thorniness of my RDV. Now you've got me curious! Cynthia...See MoreSome bloom pics, and some mid-season cause for celebration :)
Comments (32)Nicole--si, il cuor verde d'italia, esattamente! :-) It's an apt nickname. If you ever get the chance, go there! Of all the places I've been on this planet, it stands out as the most enchanting, hands down. And the wine is unique and wonderful. I call that corner the Heart of Darkness because it's where the property line meets the seawall, and it's overgrown with clusters of palms of various sorts that never seem to get manicured--and so all of the dead fronds hang there and it becomes more and more like a tiny jungle as time passes. Small *cringe*. Anyway, I'll be glad to send the cutting either way. I know your trees are young. But if you make me an offer I can't refuse, I might then hafta accept :-) We'll talk about over the winter LOL it'll give us something to do while are plumies are bare naked sticks. Thank you, Wendy! :-) You're very kind. And I don't expect you to bother John on my behalf--it's all good. If I decide I MUST have that tree (and put it where???), then you've given me enough info to, theoretically at least, find out from John what that sassy little plumie is named, if not Tangerine Dream, and then order me one! LOL it makes my day to know that y'all enjoyed my storytelling :-) You hafta have a sense of humor, I guess, right?, 'cause if you don't, one minute the iguanas are downing your trees, the next minute you're going postal! hehe In seriousness, the iguanas still come 'round often enough to decimate any progress that a few of my smaller trees have made-- it only takes 1-2 visits a month on their part. It's sad--Mary Moragne and Kona Hybrid each came to me as short 2-tips, and they've been picked clean so often that the nubby tips are tapering up to nothing. Another one recently broke a branch off Haleakala, on its way to shred the leaves, kinda beaver-style LOL. It's MADDENING but I guess there are some things that one cannot control. Comments (17)Oh PM, that is the most beautiful cabinet from windows! And it would fit my style so well! TFS! I'll show DH but I know what he'll say & I know that I'm thinking the same thing, too...WHERE WOULD YOU PUT IT??? (LOL!) I've used up all my space (& more) so I would have to get rid of something...& it wouldn't fit in DR or LR ...so probably the porch area (& I already have the corner door cabinet, Hoosier cabinet & hanging wall shelf out there! ;-) Thanks for that idea! ;-) I don't know if my DH would trade places for awhile...but I know your Mr. O would hate it here in Winter...the golf courses just opened ...tho they are soggy & cold! punk ...I don't know much about the shuttle loom or weaving...but I saw this at one of my fave consignment shops & it was $10 ...I knew the middle was called a bobbin cause I have some of those w/threads on them in a basket. First of all, I told myself I didn't need it...& then a few wks later I went bk & it was still there & 30% off (or something like that)...so I knew I needed it! :-0 Sounds like jane did some of this art, so hopefully she'll share some expertise on this pc! Thanks, Holiday-ers for your comments! Jeanne S. punk...I found this pic on Photobucket......See MoreKarolina11
