Help with Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum)

Two summer's ago, I planted a small Sourwood in my back yard. This winter I lost it. We had a particularly tough winter, deeply frozen ground for extended periods, dry winds, no snow cover after a prolonged fall drought. The size of the tree at planting was about the diameter of my thumb and about 5' tall (my thumb is about 1").

The soil here is probably alkaline, but how strongly so, I don't know. I have to have it tested.

Thanks!

I'd really like to get another one, but would like some tips on avoiding losing one again. Or should I just call it a day?

I will say, I even lost a smooth sumac this year which had been in for 4 years...

Does anyone have any experience growing a sourwood in non-acidic, or at least low acidic soils? And yes, I intend to get the soil tested.
