Craftsman Lawn Tractor Transmission problem

You'll see that some of the gears meet at a 90 degree angle. That's probably where your problem is; they are no longer meeting. You can probably repair these yourself, but it's time consuming....See MoreCraftsman tractor starting problem
Comments (9)OP - If you've cleaned all start circuit elect connection points INCLUDING the ground side and engine mounts and are still experiencing the intermittent start problem, suspect problem may be in your starter solenoid - if your tractor is equipped with a separate solenoid bolted to the frame and is of the old Ford motor type. This solenoid has a round internal plate that is pulled down by a coil to make contact for the heavy starter motor current draw.. and that plate rotates randomly, sometimes becoming burnt in spots. When the plate happens to pulls down on the burnt spots, no contact is made. Multiple tries with the ignition switch sometimes cause this plate to rotate to an useable spot - and then the starter turns. First try jumping across the two large posts ( watch out for sparks) - starter should engage. Another thing - that solenoid should have either one or two smaller wires coming to it to energize the internal coil.. if only one, then the mounting of the solenoid to the frame is the GROUND for the energizing circuit and must be clean and solid. Lastly - if the component is suspect, they are not that expensive.. just be sure to get an exact replacement and take before/during/after pixs to keep from getting screwed up on what gets hooked where. Good luck...See MoreCraftsman LT1000 Lawn Tractor Running Problems
Comments (3)Does it die if you have the transmission in neutral and take your foot off the brake, or only when it is in forward or reverse? If it dies in neutral as well, then it is probably a problem in the seat switch (Operator Presence sensing) Might be a good idea to check all safety interlock switches on the machine to make certain none have become disconnected. Also post the LT Model nomber from your owners manual or the data sticker somewhere on the machine....See Morecraftsman 42in deck lawn tractor drive belt problem
Comments (9)It can't be that hard to figure out. There is usually a diagram somewhere on the tractor. I assume it is either missing or too well hidden? At the most there should only be 5 pulleys under there for the transmission drive. The front drive pulley (@ the engine) and the driven pulley (@ the transmission) and both should be obvious. That only leaves three to deal with between the front and rear end pulleys. On one side between the drive and driven pulleys, (the return side where the belt goes towards the engine from the transmission also where the power is transmitted and the belt is tight when running) there should one solidly mounted guide pulley. On the other side between the drive and driven pulleys (where the pulley goes from the engine towards the transmission and has some slack that can be taken up with a tensioner), their should be the two tension pulleys. One pulley that is spring loaded creating the tension and one pulley near it that the tension is levered against. So all you have to do is find the one (or 2) pulley that are mobile, or spring loaded and can move. One will have the "V" grove and one will be flat for the back of the belt. Just pull the tension pulley, slide the belt between the two pulleys with the correct side facing the corresponding pulley face, and let the tension pulley pull the belt tight....See Morelalgreen
