Thanks. I am considering it for the side/front of my house that is kind of an island bed with the asphalt driveway on one side. It gets morning sun from about 8am until about 1-2pm. There have been dwarf azaleas that have survived the spot for the past 11 years without being burned, so I would assume it's ok in that area. The azaleas just don't do anything for me. They're only bloom sporadically and sometimes not at all. My experience with azaleas is that the outside can look nice but the inside gets very spindly looking.

I just transplanted six Weigela �Wine & Roses� shrubs this Spring. The leaf color right now, (about three weeks after planting), is more green than purple, and I have seen a little bit of leaf scorch too on a couple of them. I agree with duncanmsu that it takes at least one growing season for any plant to get acclimated to the environment it is transplanted into. I really believe that with regular deep watering and feeding, my Wine and Roses Weigelas will look great in a year or two. I also transplanted a Ninebark �Summer Wine� at the same time. It is located in morning sun until about 2:00 P.M., when it begins to get shade from the house. It is actually faring better than the Weigelas so far. This is probably due to the afternoon shade. I really think that since the Weigelas are in a little bit harsher climate with the full sun, it may take them a little longer to acclimate. I am hoping that through the deep watering and some Miracle Grow liquid plant food I can get the Weigelas� roots well established before July. The summers here in South Central Kansas are very harsh. I am also hoping that what others have said about the Wine and Roses Weigelas� leaves getting darker as the year progresses is true of my Weigelas too. I guess time will tell. The one thing I am learning about plants is to be patient. It�s never a good idea to start digging things up and moving them without waiting at least one growing season to see if their health and growth is improving. Still quite odd. Are the dried up leaves still attached to the plant, or do they naturally fall off(or fall off with a touch)? If they fall off, that usually means a leaf desease, which is actually good since the wood is not affected. If the leaves stay on, that usually means a wilt or canker disease in the stem, or environmental problems. What ever you do, don't give it any fertilizer. That might compound the problem. If leaves stay on, notice if the first black spotting is in any kind of pattern that is repeated on every infected leaf: near the midrib, near the outer part, spaced evenly throughout(that's a pattern too). Are the black spots angular or round/oval. If angular, do they folow the leaf veination pattern? Do the spots grow larger, or populate the leaf? Any marginal coloring to the spots? And, are the black spots yellow first, or go from green to black? BTW, how ever you prune a healthy plant doesn't matter to the plant. But on my honeysuckle vines, I always prune out the dead only because they grow so fast that you'll get a lot of build up of woody vine that you'll never know what is dead or alive. Actually, at this time of year I prune off all dead and any living that is not producing flowers. Seems pretty drastic, but it would eat my fence alive if I didn't. Rick

last pic... right side.. you might want to take out the trunk with the huge wound ... the process is called renovation pruning ... in essence.. you take out 1/3 of the plant over 3 years ... and you have 3 large trunks.. go figure on that .. lol ... if there were no insult to the roots ... you might be surprised how much energy will be funneled into the new growth ... i am still concerned about heavy plastic.. followed by landscape cloth ... as to whether there is root problems.. or future such ... but it is a willow ... probably cant beat it back with a stick ... also.. since its a willow .... odds are.. you can probably root new pieces in a couple hours ... but you will have to look that up ... ken
