Astilbe not fully flowering

My astilbe has flowers but they do not puff out. Anyone know the reason why? I have two different reds and they both do this while my white bridal veil is fine and beautiful. One of the red is Glut.

How long have you had them? I almost gave up on mine as it did the same thing.

Maybe it just needs more time...

Here is mine 3 years later...finally "puffed" out.

I save seed from Astilbes and also grow them from seed. Snip off the seed head when it is brown, then place it on a paper plate inside to dry further. When it is dry I usually run my fingers along the stem to remove the "pods", or tap the seed head on the paper plate. The seeds are like dust. I then wintersow them. One thing-they might not come true from seed but it is fun to see what you get:-) Rhonda

I tried something similar for a patch of astilbes with 3 varieties - 3 of each variety. I'm not that pleased with the way it came out. The "early" ones turned out to bloom the same time as the "middle" ones. When the "late" ones bloom, the others are not at their best. Maybe on a bigger scale you can pull it off.

No, not necessarily. The first one to "get" it or "catch" it may simply be Nuccio's Gem. The others could follow this year or next. Depends on how well the fungus reproduces or how well the pests spread. So NG, being close to other camellias, just means that they too will eventually catch it. FYI: The petal blight disease was once supposedly controlled by preventing contact of infected camellias from one affected area to other areas but the fungus spread anyways and now it is all over.

I caught the "growing from seed" bug this winter (using lights) and tried my hand at some direct sowing as well. I've determined that my preferred method is definitely indoor sowing due to the greater germination rate. However, I did direct sow some Purple Queen Corn Cockle (AKA Agrostemma Githago) in early spring. They finally began to bloom but several of the flowers never fully unfolded/emerged. The buds stay quite closed and small. I have them in a shaded area...is this why? I even cut some and placed the stems in some water in a sunny spot hoping they would finish blooming...no such luck. I really love the flower though, they are so graceful and dainty. I just love the look of the willowy stems in vase arrangements. Hoping grow a whole lot more of these darlings in the future. I plan on planting the seedlings in the fall and covering them while they winter over. Has anyone had success indoor sowing corn cockle? Have you had success with them in full sun? How do you cut these since they are really just one long stem and the flowers don't all bloom at the same time? I'm in zone 7 by the way, in sandy soil at the Jersey Shore.

Here's my Glut:

It would be helpful to have a photo of yours to see if there really is a problem. 'Glut' doesn't puff out like the one in the post above, but the color is so intense, it really doesn't matter IMO. Different hybrid Astilbe have different parentage, so you can't expect all the flowers to look the same.

Mine looks just like yours but no puffing at all. Does yours eventually puff all totally? Will try and get photo.

I have a white one, I think, its so pale and un puffy I can't tell if its white or pink, I also have a pink one, pale, no puff. . . If there were more choices for shade I wouldn't even grow them. The foliage is pretty tho.

I have bridal veil and it is in full bloom with great puffiness. It is 12 feet Fromm the Bressingham which I stated above is not puffy. The Bridal Veil gets much more sun. I'm going to try and move the Glut and Bressingham to sunnier locations. Go figure. I'm a zone 3/4.

Did you even read what I wrote in my first reply? I'll post it again just in case you didn't.

Mine is in full sun, so what you see is what you get.

Aren't the only puffy Astilbes the Chinese varieties?

ETA, my only puffed one is Astilbe chinensis 'Visions'. My Astilbe arendsiis are skinny....I spoke too soon and now see there are many puffy arendsiis, I need more puff!

Yonderbound - would you have a photo of your bridal veils that you could share here? I'd love too see them "puffed" because I want too see what I'm missing. I'm in 6B Canada zone and my astilbes only get morning sun. I can post pic of mine tomorrow.
