3 year old weeping cherry - where are the flowers!?

In the spring of 2007, my wife and I planted a weeping cherry in our front yard. It leafs out every year, but no flowers yet. Should it be taking this long? The tree gets plenty of sun, and it's mulched well. It grows a little bit every year also, but we've yet to see the blooms we've been eagerly waiting for.

i have had one for 8 years.. from a $2 plastic bag.. that NEVER has bloomed ...

how big did you start ..???

is it in full sun???

do you fertilize it??? or fertilize the lawn heavily??

buds are SET late the previous summer ... drought last summer.. or a severe winter can destroy said buds ... any info in that regard??

have you previously seen it in bloom .. like the year you bought it????

It was probably about 2' tall when we started. It's in full sun. Never been fertilized nor has the lawn. We have harsh winters, but nothing TOO major (neighbors also have weeping cherries that bloom). Never seen it bloom at all

I have a 40 year old weeping cherry tree that has some unusual behavior this year. The tree was a little late blooming (as most trees in the East this year) but there are very few leaves. There are many weeping limbs that are bare. I know it is not much to go on. I can post pics if that will help. Any idea what could be causing this issue? I am a little concerned as I had to cut a 30 year old dog wood last year. It bloomed but the leaves and flowers were the size of a dime. As I cut it down, I found an infection running down the middle of the trunk.

I have 4yo trees from raintree. Dwarf 4in1 on G-5 rootstock. There are 2 trees. The beginning of May the bees were all over them, bumblebees, worker bees, even carpenter bees! There were hundreds of white flowers. The varieties are lapins, mont, stella, royal anne. The amount of cherries i am seeing now is amazing! These trees are 10 ft high by 5 ft wide. I use snakes to scare the birds away. Sounds like a pollination problem. When the blooms flower its only for a few days, so if you can, keep an eye on them during the sunny afternoon hours. Watch the bee traffic around the flowers. This is the first year i did this and was amazed at what i saw! There are 150 to 200 cherries on these two trees. Hope my dollar store snakes do their job this season! :) Awesome thread and posts!

Most weeping cherries are grafted on to a single upright trunk......very hard to find one of the size you are looking for. Once you factor in shipping and handling, you may be paying almost as much as if you were to visit a local nursery. And online sales to California tend to be limited (unless from an instate source) because of agricultural restrictions. Plus, many online sources do not provide warranties for their plants as do local nurseries/garden centers and ornamental cherries are one tree I would definitely be looking for a warranty with! That said, most ornamental cherries are not very expensive trees in most nurseries - they certainly sell for a lot less than $60-120 around here! And right now is an excellent time to find them as bare root stock, which tend to be even less expensive than potted ones. Home Depot and Lowe's typically have these available quite inexpensively as well.

I wouldnt think so because it was raised in a big pot with all hair roots intact. Now if you bust it to pieces trying to get it out better wait till the leaves fall off.

They're in the future. How long it'll take to be old enough to flower is very variable depending on conditions, could be anything from next year (if conditions are good) to 10 years time (if not good for it). More likely sooner than later though.

thought this one is full sun ... how close to the maple ...

Ken, the driveway separates the maple from the cherry. It is not being shaded by the maple at all. I will get a picture tonight

the driveway does NOT separate the aggressive roots of the maple.. from anything within twice the distance of the height of the maple ...

you must insure that your babe is sufficiently watered for the first 2 or 3 years ,... so that it can grow a sufficient root mass to attain maturity ...

maples can kill the most invasive weed in the world.. otherwise know as grass ... it can and will impact your little 2 foot stick.. if you dont take care of it ...

did you amend the planting hole .. and if you did ... i know where the maple is growing new roots ... been there. done that ...

if the maple is a babe.. then the cherry has a fighting chance ...

At only 2' tall sounds like it's a seedling, unless something like a very low grafted or cutting raised Snow Fountains ('Snofozam') TM.

Are the branches weeping? There has been at least one prior post asking about a "weeping" cherry gotten off of e-bay I think that was growing as a low-forking bush with upright branches - and was therefore clearly not a weeping cherry.
