I see you grew Zinnia 'Envy', too...don't you love them!

I have never had luck germinating the Yellow Datura varieties....no problem with any of the others....yours is fabulous!

I hope your baby bunny isn't enjoying your garden too much...;o)

Also, do you know what variety the Aster is in this photo?:

I think it would be wise to keep this thread going. I do not believe we have seen the last of the damage because some more of it could show up next spring. Plants that have been in a weakened condition this year may not make it through winter for next year. I think it would be wise to make notes of who is not doing well at all, who is trying to make it, and who is unphased and doing well. Some have commented on other plants' conditions related to surviving. I think it is valuable. Also, I think that we ought to, where possible, note the condition of the fruit crops because many of them are in the rose family. I have out of desperation to try to save my garden been using Messenger this year and am seeing some promising results on plants that were in bad shape. Some are not responding to anything, but some are making a comeback. I am making a photographic record of a set of the same 5 roses every weekend to track progress. Some I am photographing when they look good but not regularly. As of right now, the new growth that I am getting since using Messenger and the Bayer sprays is absolutely clean even on Barbara Streisand, my blackspot indicator. There may be hope, but I think we need to pool our knowledge and experience to get through this. One other small thing. If you have a no-spray garden, do you have a no-housework house?

Hi All. Thanks for the kind comments. I thought perhaps that people would enjoy the last part of the garden -- the greenhouse, and the one I suspect will be the main part for the next 6 months. I have always aspired to have a winter garden. Heck, what gardner who lives in my climate wouldn't. I have tried this on some level for a number of years, but it mainly became a place to grow plants on benches, and not really a plant room. Part of the reason is the plants I chose to grow were adapted to cool greenhouse conditions. And partly because I just didn't have the time and energy to maintain it as a warmer garden conservatory-room. But last spring, I decided to plant out and abandon a lot of my cool greenhouse plants, and over the past few years I have started to grow more houseplants and orchids. And so, my partner Jim and I decided we were going to group these plants together in the greenhouse and rotate some of them up into the house from here. So, here is how the greenhouse looked yesterday, after we finally moved the outdoor plants in over the past few days (and after one of the mildest Octobers anyone here can recall I am sure). I am forcing amaryllis and paperwhites and other cooled bulbs to grow too. Bring on the winter!

Greenhaven, I'm so glad you posted pictures. Welcome! You've really done a tremendous job in a short period of time. How lucky to have all that ledge and the way you've incorporated the gardens is really great. It all looks quite natural. PL, Love those sunflowers! I've tried them from seed before a handful of times, but as soon as I get them planted the chipmunks come along and dig them up while mocking me. Jewel weed brings me back to nature walks with my mom. Used to use it on poison ivy. I always thought it was a great cure, but as I got older I realized I'm not allergic to poison ivy, so I'm not sure if my "tests" as a child were valid! It looks great in such a mass like that. I guess I made it just in the nick of time to post for August. Hard to believe tomorrow is September. I know there was some talk in another thread about the smaller butterfly bushes. They're kind of hard to photograph, but I have three in a row forming a bit of a hedge and I really like the way they bloom later. There was also a discussion about heptacodium on another thread where everyone said it would break and most were unhappy with it. That really changed the way I'm treating this shrub/tree. I was planning on limbing it up into a tree, but after reading everyone's experiences I've decided to leave it more as a very large shrub, or at least a non-limbed up tree. The hibiscus are in bloom now on the other side of the fence. Those will stay when we get our new fence later this fall. I've never done annual asters before, but this middle bed of the veggie garden starts as lettuce and once the crop is done I let the nasturtium take over. I threw in some annual asters and I have to say I really like them a lot. One of the back beds with zinnias still going. Another bed back there. Holy cow! The bees are insane with the turtlehead and anemone blooming. Interestingly, the bees swarm to the barely open anemone flowers with 5 or 6 of them all huddled and fighting for space. The open flowers are not touched. The lespedeeza is starting its show. I do wish the clethra would bloom just a tad later so the white would be blooming with the pink. Here's a closer shot of one of the back beds. There's a carpet rose blooming in the bed behind the butterfly bushes. I like the peach and blue combo with the physocarpos mixed in for good measure. Love the fairy rose that comes back strong while so many other plants are withering in the heat! The front slope is filled in with all the colorful shrubs. Lobelia and caryopteris. I put them together because the caryopteris can hold up the lobelia when it flops. Cottage garden gone wild! I really, really, really love amsonia hubrichtii. I'll post this picture again when the amsonia and the climbing hydrangea both turn glowing yellow. Ironweed is great this time of year. Okay, okay, I'll stop! LOL! I get carried away. There is so much going on in the garden now and so much more to come. Such a great time of year.

2011 Lopsided Garden / Lumpy Roses Part II

Folks, I forgot to update that 2011 is the Year of Camera Experiment. I used to have to wait for the perfect lighting either dawn or sunset, lol! and with certain roses they'd mushroom out and lose their spirals by then, haha! So this year I started messing with the manual settings of my Canon Rebel XSi. I sent these to Jim first to look at, lol! The Ralph Lauren Cover Boy model for the camera is Jim's Baby Napoleon Distant Drums :D 1. Here is the default Sports setting 2. Here is the TV setting of 160 with the wrong fluorescent instead of the sunlight setting but still kind of cool 3. Here is a TV setting of 250 with sunlight setting 4. Here is my favorite TV setting of 200 with sunlight setting I also forgot to demo my frustrations with how HTs mushroom out into moppy blooms with open stamens in the heat... and when it gets cooler HTs start to "normalize"; not quite there but better... I also forgot to show 2 more blooms. Crepuscule is going to be shovel-pruned next year. It started out as a 5" band and grew to be a 6' tall rose, but after the first winter it had to be cut down to a 7" rose from which it never regained much vitality afterwards. It doesn't have quite enough scent for me to have patience. Only highly fragrant roses get coddled in my garden, lol! Another rose, Aromatherapy. This rose is highly fragrant and the color is the perfect deeper bubblegum pink that is slower to fade. But it is highly BS vulnerable and requires a lot of Gardenville sea tea to keep it healthy- way too expensive to sustain, lol! It is coddled because of the fragrance. I may replace it in a few years with Laguna if a friend from England likes her Laguna. I would replace Aromatherapy with Belinda's Dream which is HT PERFECT in bloom form! but the pink is not the deep pink alas!

Thanks guys-the aster is Aster matsumoto. And the baby bunnies (there were three) are, shall we say, thriving (which means they are enjoying my garden very much)! The great thing is, because I wsed so many things, it doesn't bother me quite as much when they nibble.

Your datura pictures are AWESOME! I think I may have to try growing them again next year. I sowed some indoors last year under lights and had 4 seedlings, but I guess I didn't let them get big enough before I planted them out because they just "disappeared". Who knows....maybe the bunnies.....I've got tons of them too!

Did you winter sow your datura? Any tips you can give me?

Actually, the datura seeds were planted right in the ground and then left alone. I didn't coddle them in the least bit. I have heard that they can resent transplanting, but am not sure if that is a rock-solid rule. Actually, I never watered mine or anything until I read here on GW that they really need food and regular watering. And here I was thinking they liked it dry lol

Bunnies don't usually eat them-nor deer-because of the fuzzy leaves (not to mention they are poisonous). Believe me, if bunnies had any leaning towards taking a bite, I would have found out. I don't even know how many little litters were born in our yard this year.

I will let you know when I start saving the seeds. I have to take a picture of the double purple datura seed pod-it looks like a purple alien brain lol

I love the closeups, some with black backgrounds- they all are so vibrant- and, the closeups from the back of the bloom- very interesting

I DID collect the seeds of the Aster-so if anyone wants to trade, email me please :)

Of course, I can't guarantee that it will grow true since it was planted along with all the other asters....
