Comments (10)Thank you all so much for your flattering comments. I'm so glad you like the pictures. bellegallica, you rose you're inquiring about is Charmian, one the earlier Austin roses. The fragrance is magnificant and when several flowers are open it's quite a presence in the garden. I got mine from Vintage; don't know whether it's still on offer there. Comments (16)hmm, that's interesting, Hamp. So far they've been almost all pink. Sorry for the not so wonderful picture from last year- Mine came from Lisa at Countryside, if I remember right and I'm not sure where she got hers. But both descriptions of the ARE and AShdown clones describe a pink rose with a yellow base. So far I have only seen pink with a little cream. No bs or any problems so far and she still has all her leaves from last year. Interesting to read the comments on hmf about WRS; I guess there's some disagreement about its parentage: Maman Cochet x Mme Hoste white maman cochet x hermosa k. aug. viktoria x maman cochet Some on hmf describe it as a white rose with pink. Makes you think there's more than one of her around. Or maybe it's the location. Anyone else have thoughts?...See MoreThe Tea Rose William R. Smith
Comments (19)WOW! Thanks for all the good info. It sounds as though William gets as large as Mrs. BR. I was hoping I could keep him contained with a 7 ft. spacing from other bushes. Is that possible, or does he need more than that? I know some teas can take some pruning, and some will not. I never severely prune a bush unless it has damage, but I do like to keep things controlled and shaped. Would the colors in William look pretty if planted near Mrs BR? For some reason I thought he was going to have more pale yellow tones to him. I need something to contrast with her a little and set her off. If he looked good near Mrs. BR, he could get a 9 or 9 1/2 ft spacing from her....See MoreHeight of William R. Smith
Comments (5)OR, depending upon where you are, and how they do, as much at 5 years. To be honest, in a mild climate, Tea Roses really don't NEED an "annual pruning." The best time to trim is when conditions are hot and dry, because that's when they approach dormancy. They'll do their best blooming in cool weather with regular rains. And any pruning you do is not for the good of the roses, but for your convenience -- if they are in your way, for instance. Plant them where they can get as big as they want, and the only real pruning you need do is removal of any dead canes. Even then, make sure a cane is dead, before you remove it -- and find that some of your best new growth is attached to it. :-) Jeri...See Morecollinw
