Crown Gall on Weeping Willow - Help!

Hello all-

I just found out through internet research that my 5 year old Weeping Willow has Crown Gall! The only growth I can see is at the base of the trunk. I've read the suggestion to remove the tree and to not plant anything in the "affected" soil for 2 years. :( I planted this Willow in a moist spot as a screen from a new house that was built that faces my house and I would HATE to have to remove the tree. So my question is, has anyone had success with the Gallex stuff, or would I just be wasting my time and stalling the inevitable death of the tree? The tree *appears* to my amateur eye to be healthy otherwise. If I use the stuff, should I cut the gall off (and of course disinfect the tools, etc.) and then spray the area, or just spray the gall? Any help is appreciated...thanks in advance!
