gaw1, they quit shipping because it gets too hot for the roses in transport.
i see rogue valley will try to ship year round but if the weather is too warm or cold will not. most of these nurseries will hold your order for you, and ship at your requested date. that is how i order. i usually request april 15, but i might order them in nov,dec,jan.
it's really about getting in touch with the nursery and making arrangements.

Someone else on this forum stated that roses are not tomatoes, the last time we discussed planting dates in the north. You can very well plant bareroot or container roses in April, even late March if the ground is thawed. I always have my order(s) shipped to arrive in mid-April.

Roses are not frost-tender. And you want to get them in the ground asap so they can take advantage of the cool weather and spring rains in order to grow roots.

It is still ok to plant roses in zone 5, although much later than now you'll want to be watering extra and providing shade. Rose vendors don't ship this late because although it may be cool enough for planting where you're at, the trucks they're being shipped on aren't.

I wish I was able to plant in the fall as well, but a Nov. or even Oct. planting date is not early enough for the roses to establish themselves before a harsh winter.

gaw1, many of us order roses September - December and request to have them shipped at the proper time. For me, that would be bareroots shipped in mid-March, own roots in mid-April. You also get the best selection by ordering in the fall. Some bareroot vendors (Regan, S&W Greenhouse) also stop shipping early.

gawl - Who's stopped shipping already that are selling own roots? That seems rather odd to me since it is just May.

If I'm reading this right, you have a very short, cool growing season, and fairly cold winters. That's not going to be an easy situation to try and establish small roses into. How do the locals do it? Are they buying almost exclusively potted, grafted roses from local nurseries? That's probably the most conservative route.

If that's what they are doing, and you want to expand your choices, what we have recommended for people in similar situations is to order the roses for delivery at roughly the same time we would get them in the east. Then pot them, up and be prepared to move them in and out of shelter depending on the weather. Then it can be planted in the ground when it's safe.

BTW, the recommended drop-dead date for here, by which a rose the size most of the own-root nurseries ship, should be in the ground is July 4th. A very hardy 1 gal. rose can be fall planted here. Smaller, less hardy roses don't have good survival rates that first winter.

Thanks for all the info. Lesson learned is that more early planning on my part is necessary. I like the suggestion about potting them and then putting them in the ground. Hadn't thought of that one.

Chamblees is done till fall, but most are still shipping. gawl - check out Euro Roses. They will be much bigger than Chamblees, and they are still shipping.

I think Heirloom is still shipping. Seems like I have ordered from them during high summer before.

If you have not ordered from them before please know their roses are small (but vigorous) cute little babies when you get them. I liked ordering from Heirloom though and have never had any problems.

Try High Country roses out of Jensen, UT for hardy roses that should do just fine if you plant them around June 15. They are own root, and are larger than bands as they are one year old plants. They will ship through most, if not all, of the summer.

I ordered my gallicas to arrive in June, and one will arrive in July. Have not had any problems with HCR roses surviving for me. I don't prefer to plant out new roses (excepting bareroots) before about June because a hard frost below 28F can zap them. Last year we had a hard frost June 7 that knocked everything back...
