Magnolia Grandis blooming

It is that stately magnolia with those giant pink flowers. The colour, the beauty, and the fragrance are unmatched.

Does anyone offer this species for sale?

I have looked and can not find a species named "Magnolia grandis" list taxonomically or in the industry. From the pictures it looks like it is either M. champaca (Formally Michellia champaca)or M. stellata variety. Most likely with the "fragrant" description associated with your picture it is the M. champaca, which is a tropical species.

I doubt that it is a M. stellata due to the absence of a pubescence on the underside of the leaves in the pictures and the waxy cuticle on the upper surface of the leaf.

Try some of the tropical dealers in the industry, that is my best guess on species and sourcing the plant.

Yes, I've been to Kunming before and the botanical gardens there are outstanding. The weather there reminds me a bit of Mexico City without the pollution, where it never gets real hot and it never gets real cool, just in the middle all year long. The Hangzhou botanic gardens are also very nice, but the climate is more seasonal. We have seagulls here in Kansas also(about 440 miles from the nearest ocean at it's closest point, which is the Gulf of Mexico). They love to hang out around the dump though. A large number show at large local lakes also and a few hang around fast food joints looking for scraps. Then there's the large annual migration of Franklin's Gull to and from it's breeding grounds in the central prairies of Canada and it's winter home's of Argentina and Chile(some stay in the Caribbean) which can last for a few weeks in Kansas. Sometimes they continually fly over, especially at night it seems, for hours and hours at a time.

I don't grow them. I have very little shady area in my garden now that we lost a large street tree from the front of my house. :-( My Colchicum was pushing through this weekwend. It will make a big show for the next month. Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is in its pink glory. Those and Aster, Geranium Rozanne, Miscanthus 'Morning Light', Hosta June, Halcyon, Blue Angel, Kossa Regal and Blue Mouse Ear are the only things that don't look ratty and tired like the rest in my garden right now.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of this Chinese species. There seems to be very little info on the web about it. Little that I found claims that it is about as cold hardy as M. grandiflora (down to about 7a). Some of what I've read suggests the foliage is more clustered at the tips compared to M. grandiflora --thus appearing less dense (lush?) than the native American species. Thanks for the enlightening posting.

I don't know the grower you refer to in northern California...maybe I missed it. But take Sonoma Horticultural Nursery for example. This climate seems, superficially, to have much warmer summers than the Bay Area. 85/58 versus 72/53-ish. But the cool nights and lack of summer innundation means root-rot sensitive plants flourish in the climate...such as the Rhododendron xanthocodons which grow in high elevation Yunnan. But that series of Rhododendrons is basically ungrowable on the east coast anywhere south of Cape Cod. (and barely growable north of Cape Cod for the opposite reason; although there are plants of cinnabarinum hybrids like 'Biskra' in the most sheltered gardens of Nova Scotia) Who knows whether this Magnolia has such sensitivity to heat; that fact it grows in a hot coastal city would seem to argue it does not. However it might have been grafted onto something more suitable for the region. Who knows...I certainly don't as I know very little about China's horticultural practices. But in parts of the West, certainly the majority of it, grafting of rare Magnolia cultivars and species is the standard propagation technique. I should know, I just did my yearly trimming of rootstock suckers on various cultivars and hybrids like 'Tina Durio' and Magnolia ÃÂ wieseneri. Magnolia delavayi has been reported in the US SE, but is quite rare, and those plants could be grafts onto M. grandiflora for all I know. Maybe Magnolias are less likely to have such root issues, but I don't think they are immune from them. I'm pretty sure I've read that Magnolia wilsonii is not growable in climates with very hot summers...and the NCSU doesn't have one which is always an ominous sign. JCR was surely aware of them and anxious to try one as they are a classic collector's plant in Europe. Looking at the NCSU Arb. pages I spotted this. Certainly wouldn't mind having one! The flowers are small but the habit is superior to many M. virginianas I've seen. Those photos don't look to be Magnolia grandis to me. They're Magnolia insignis. Note the lack of densely whitened leaf undersides, which along with red-pink flowers and evergreen leaves is key for M. grandis. The pale green color of the leaf undersides along with red-pink flowers and being evergreen is key for M. insignis.

On the other hand, the Magnolia Society photo - taken in Yunnan - shows leaves quite like those in the second photo at the start of the thread.

M. insignis seen here have narrowish, pointed leaves held in a stiffly down-pointing fashion and often appearing mostly scattered over the shoots rather than bunched together.

Like other species related to one another the mu lian shu are differentiated by specific morphological characteristics described by botanists using technical terms. To make full use of such descriptions you have to learn the lingo.

The efloras Flora of China has Magnolia split up into separate genera. The mu lian shu are described as Manglietia species.

After downloading the photos and trying to blow them up, I suppose it could be the quality of the photos not showing the whitened leaf undersides properly. I can't really see enough detail to be 100% confident which species this Magnolia is.

Flora of China mentions the leaf undersides of the da guo mu lian having minute projections (papillae). Not seeing anything about a white appearance there, if this is true it appears they left it out.
